'This book is a celebration of all the growers, farmers, fishermen, artisans and food providores I have met . . . a tribute to the people behind the food I love.' In IT TASTES BETTER, Kylie Kwong has created over 100 recipes inspired by fresh, seasonal and sustainably produced food, including Salad of Poached Squid with Pickled Cucumber, Dill & Chilli, Red-Braised Lamb Shoulder with Roast Garlic & Tamari Dressing, and an irresistible Pavlova. Embarking on a journey around Australia to meet the people behind the sustainable produce she is so passionate about, Kylie learns about the care they take to produce food that literally tastes better. As I found when I browsed through the book with my yellow sticky notes to alert The Spouse to recipes we might try, I found page after page after page celebrating the passion the purveyors of ingredients have for their product… before finally finding a recipe. This profusion of passion is why the book is so heavy and is a liability in a domestic kitchen where space is at a premium. It won’t fit into nine out of ten recipe book holders, that’s for sure. ‘Mark Eather’s Scallops’, for instance gets 5 full page photos (including an irrelevant one of Kylie fishing for calamari) and three pages of yada-yada about the scallops. And then after all that there’s only one recipe for Roast Scallops with Potato and Caramelised Pork. Which, judging by the ratio of scallop to pork, is more about the pork.
