My first try, despite yearning to read Laskar Pelangi ever since high school.

I'm impressed with the story-telling; humorous and insightful. Some parts just grips at my heart while others made me giggle gleefully. All in all, it's one of my favorites this year.

Now, I cant wait to get my hands on all the author's other works.

Review in English

The Field of Moon tells the journey of life of 2 people, a woman named Maryamah who used to be called as Enong and Ikal (a nickname that represent Andrea himself). Enong had to face a tragic life since childhood. Her dream was to be able to speak English fluently, but the faith brought her into different path. She came from a poor family, her father saved up some money to buy her an English dictionary. She was thrilled when she received it and treasured it more than people treas

A review of The Moon Field and also Love in The Glass - sorry but they're actually one book instead of two so I can't help unifying them.

I thought this book was a separated topic from the very popular The Rainbow Troops tetralogy. I was wrong after all. This book (or should I say these books because it actually contains two books in one package) is a perfect continuation of that tetralogy. Why Andrea Hirata did it? We never know. It should be - according to me - a hexalogy instead of a tetralogy

This book is very interesting and funny. Because in this book tells the story of a love story between Ikal and A Ling when they were grown. Until one day,Ikal thought that A ling has been proposed by a handsome and dashing young man from across the island. This incident makes Ikal doing silly ideas to win back love A ling. And the worst is that he canceled his plans to go to Jakarta to find work, when he was on the ship. Only thanks to the success of his mission of love A ling Back snatch. And t ...more

Seperti kebanyakan orang Melayu, kisah Padang Bulan buatku terlalu mendayu-dayu. Ahh.. Mengapakah Om Andrea kini? Kemana karya sekelas Laskar Pelangi dan Sang Pemimpi itu? Anyway, i love the poetry. Moon Over My Obscure Little Town

I know I am so behind in getting this book. After the tetralogy, I must admit that I 'lost appetite' a bit with Andrea Hirata's writings -- more because the fourth novel, Maryamah Karpov, was not so satisfactory. I decided then to grab it from my local bookstore when I felt like missing Andrea's works and his humble yet amusing stories.

At first I have no idea that Ikal, again, becomes the centre of attention. This kinda a let down as I felt like it would be great if this book is dedicated to foc

Hmmm... Maryamah!
luar biasa dirimu! perjuangan, pengorbanan untuk keluarga, untuk optimisme dan untuk kaummu.

sayang di akhir cerita, Ikal bernasib tragis dan menuliskan sebuah puisi kegetiran:

Hirata always been my favorite author. His ability to turn daily basis acts and event to an amazing drama and stuffs worth reading. His Big book of coffee drinker is just unbelievably good. His humour based on small things that happens everyday is ridiculously funny. Hirata captures his life as an idea of his whole books. Tetralogy Laskar Pelangi came from the ideas of his childhood friends and in this Padang Bulan and Cinta dalam gelas, picture of the first woman who plays chess and tin miners ...more

As you know, Andrea Hirata is a great writter.
The story about Padang Bulan is so interesting. All the characters was told so well.
The strongest character that I'm loved is Enong. She was a strong girl since she was a kid.
And as she's grow up, she is a girl who hard work to her family. Her life is so hard as a girl, but she is happy because she alwaya be thankful for all that she have in her life, and her spirit to learn at an english course was good. I can't believe in those story. If this is my

I was hoping this book will be as fresh as the writers first tetralogy, nevertheless, unfortunately, to me, the flow of the story was not really natural. Some parts were being pushed too early in the story.
This time he tried to bring up love as the concept along with the up and down side of life. It wouldn't be fair if I compare this book to his previous ones, as, in a sense, I might be biased. But all in all, the writer still has his grips in exploring the ironic yet romantic words. Which some

Padang Bulang & Cinta di Dalam Gelas:

Andrea's use of language doesn't contain as much surprise as in Laskar Pelangi; however, these two books still constitute an entertaining account of life in his island of Belitong. I just wish the women were drawn more fully - at times they feel like stereotypes.

Read this book like coming to traditional cafe (Bahasa Indonesia: warung kopi) in faraway village in Belitong Island, order a glass of coffee, then listen to locals (Malay people) talk rambling things but sometimes important, maybe nothing good but you possibly leave the warung kopi with light heart.

This is an interesting book. When I read it, I could not stop smile even laugh. I like the jokes. Also, the story is really good. From this book I can see the struggle of Ikal to get a job. And if we want to evaluate someone, don't see from the outside. Sometimes he/she has a good attitude that we never see before.

After Laskar Pelangi tetralogy, I was longing for another book by Hirata. He proves that his writing doesn't need to circle around Ikal and his friends, but also about different people, stories, plots. I love how some parts have relations to Laskar Pelangi, without making Padang Bulan 'stealing' fame from Laskar Pelangi. Having it back to back with Cinta dalam Gelas is also a big plus.

Hirata did it again!! I was a bit surprised at how well he composed the plot. As usual, he writes about humanity, as well as many faces of life and positive attitudes of people who strive through it. I love his simple, honest, and witty way of storytelling. Enjoyed reading it a lot!
