About the Rhea Jensen series. I like to tongue-in-cheek tell people, WARNING: This Series Contains Mormons. This series is more mystery/adventure with a dab of romance. HOWEVER, the last book in the series, Walk of Infamy, will be a stand-alone novel and end to the Rhea Jensen series that Pimpernel fans will likely enjoy.
While reviewing books on my to read list City Limits caught my eye. I remembered how much I enjoyed the first two books in this series so I requested City Limits from the library and jump right into it. I was not disappointed.
Sheralyn has such a fun way of poking fun at the LDS culture. She makes me laugh at her characters and at myself too.
I love the relationship between Rhea & Ty and love the supporting characters too.
If you are looking for something a little snarky and a lot of fun the Rhea Jensen series is a great bet.
This book was originally released back in 2005 with the title Idle Playgrounds. Someday I would like to go back and read the original release to see what has changed as I read that quite a bit has.
Originally read September of 2012 - Reread November 2016 (Even better the 2nd time around)
Clear your schedule before you pick up this book, because you won't want to put it down. I thought the previous version of this book, Idle Playgrounds, was great, but this was fabulous! Sheralyn has heavily revised her novel into a more succinct, fast-moving, and thoroughly modern work that will leave you eager for her next book. Rhea's voice is much stronger here, and the ending far more realistic. I have only two small criticisms: the old title was better, and the editing errors kept pulling me from the story (i.e. much for must, missing articles, and extra words). But overall, one of the best books I've ever read. :)
Another great book in the Rhea Jensen series. This one was a little different, however. I wasn't really sure what was going on with the mystery. It all started with a suicide attempt that Rhea and her friend, Kay, witnessed. A secret society wanted to keep things covered. Very fast-paced, intense, and original, but I didn't really get many hints about who they were running from and what was going on. I really enjoyed the romance angle. But....it was a cliff-hanger. I can't wait to read the next book (and final, I believe) in the series. I have really enjoyed this series so far!!
*I received this from goodreads first reads and that in no way influenced my review.*
I really enjoy a book that can keep my attention and get my heart pumping...Sheralyn Pratt does just that! I look forward to reading book 4, "Kaysville".
At the time this book was written it was the third one of the Rhea Jensen Series. However, a couple of years later another one was added - I think they call it 1.5 to keep the other books in the same reading order. This is really the fourth book in the series.
Originally printed as Idle Playgrounds, City Limits has a slightly different story line in a few places, but the basic plot moves forward about the same way in both version.
E-book editing, once again, is horrible!!! I think in all the books of this series the Capital R just didn't work, amid other things, of course.
This is another great installment in the Rhea Jensen series. I enjoyed the main plot quite a bit--the mystery to be solved was intriguing. I didn't care as much about the missionary side plot with Andy. I guess it was used as a way to further Rhea's and Ty's relationship? I love Rhea, Kay, and Ty. They are great characters and I like the chemistry they have between them. I also liked getting a better look at the bigger picture (i.e. who Rhea used to work for and how she got the skills she possesses and how this may impact the rest of her life).
Kay moves to utah and what do you know, there's just the right crime to figure out! Kay's story is definitely a hard one, her life has not been peaches and cream, but it's made her great. I can really relate to her, write more Kay books please!!!
Realistic danger, suspenseful, a page turner, a sweet romance, humorous: I laughed out loud numerous times, and no language, sex, or graphic violence. I highly recommend this Rhea Jensen series by Sheralyn Pratt!
I really enjoy this series. I really like Rhea and Kay. I like that they help each other out and enjoy their close friendship. This installment has plenty of action and not a dull moment. It moves along quickly and you have to keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next. I do wish we had a little more background on Rhea. The first couple of books she’s just a cool PI, but this time around she is like a Super-PI. Maybe her background will be brought up in the next book, but at times I felt a little lost in this one. The bad guy seemed to come out of the blue and seems it will take the series in a totally different angle than just a cool PI solving mysteries. So, while I totally enjoyed the story and will keep reading the series I’m only giving this one three stars because I was just a little lost in this one. Besides not knowing more about Rhea’s past, there are a couple other reasons holding me back from really loving this one.
First, the relationship with Ty and Rhea, I just don’t buy it. I don’t really know who Ty is and what purpose he has besides being Rhea’s “trophy-boy” who looks good and is there occasionally to lend moral support. I think their relationship is just too private. I didn’t get to be there for when they first met, or the three months leading up to them dating. I missed the four weeks they are dating and any important conversations they might have had. I think Ty’s past is brushed over too much and it’s too easily accepted that he’s “changed”. I don’t really know what he was like before and I just have a vague idea of who he is now. In my mind, they don’t know each other near well enough (or long enough) to be making the kind of commitments they are talking about making. And, he just seems kind of useless compared to Rhea, almost pathetic. Like he’s the old-fashioned wife who is told to stay at home while the “man” takes care of business. I’m all for a kick-butt heroine that is smart and can take care of herself. But, at the same time I’m kind of traditional and like my men to be men and women to be feminine. I wouldn’t mind Rhea being a little more feminine and actually have Ty be more manly and maybe help her out a bit more, instead of being the obedient and disapear into the background when trouble comes knocking.
Secondly, the first couple of books there is a nice side story of Rhea joining the LDS church. I was a little lost in this book, and I guess so was Rhea. I was left wondering why she even bothered to join? It seems like she is kind of negative about the church and even the members, especially poor Andy (why are they so mean to Andy? Making fun of his clothes, car, etc. They think he is judgmental, but really I think Ty, Kay and Rhea are the ones being judgmental). There wasn’t as much of the church stuff in this book, it seems like it was just pushed to the back burner. I’m left wondering why she joined if she is going to be so blasé about it and not really commit.
Again, I love this series! I would stay up all night to read one of these books. I read City Limits (published 2010) and then went back to Idle Playgrounds (published 2005) to read how she changed the story. They are essentially the same beginning and ending, but the middle is way different! Both are considered the 3rd book in the Rhea Jensen series. Almost like reading a whole other book. There is more action in City Limits and City Limits includes Rhea's missionary who converted her, Andy. I didn't like the constant put downs to Andy. I liked his car choice, but I understand its place in the book. I guess I would be more attracted in real life to Andy, but my dreams to Ty...
Continued Note: Sheralyn Pratt published the first three books in this series first under another publisher in 2003, 2004, 2005. When Sheralyn Pratt changed publishers in 2010, and the new publisher wanted to change the name of her books, she rewrote the first three to go along with the new titles. The third book has the most changes to it.
Original Titles: 1-Spies, Lies and a pair of Ties 2-Welcome to Stalk Lake City 3-Idle Playgrounds
New Titles: 1-City of Angels 2-Welcome to Stalk Lake City (same name) 3-City Limits
4 & 5 are newly written in 2012 & 2013.
The titles confused me when I was first purchasing used copies of her books. But, I liked the series so much, I have hard copies of her old series and ebooks of her new ones.
Helping Kay with her first news story as a reporter for a Salt Lake news station, Rhea somehow becomes involved in the investigation of a suicide attempt (which appears to be a frame-up). Just as she starts to put the pieces of the puzzle together, a dark SUV appears outside her home. The men who arrived with the SUV hand her an envelope of money and tell her to stop investigating or they would hurt someone she cares about. Of course, this only serves to intrigue Rhea, who finds ways to investigate without being caught. Rhea is really flustered when Kay calls while being visited by the same men who offer her an envelope full of cash to reveal on air what she knew about the same case.
All of this would be difficult in a normal week, but add in the missionary who taught Rhea the gospel visiting before heading to the Y in Provo for school and his jealous comments about her friends and boyfriend, and you have a nightmare.
Rhea and Kay end up on a high speed chase to Teton Village, Wyoming in search of the leader of the group of men who instigated the framed suicide attempt. What they find there is more than they bargained for.
I LOVE this whole series. This installment was filled to the brim with action, AND romance. If it was a movie, it would be the perfect date night flick: action, car chases and romance!
Even though this is book 3 in the Rhea Jensen series it was easy to follow and get into. It is a fun crime novel that moves along quickly. I would like to know more about Rhea and Kay and how they got where they are there are things in this book that give us a little of the past. Very fast moving and I love Rhea and Kay a wonderful team and true friends who have each others back.
Rhea's love interest, Ty is also a likeable strong character. It will be fun to see where this goes.
I just finished reading this book today. I think it was Greeeaat! It was really intense, and had mellow parts in it too, and very realistic. This is the third book in the series. I love rheas personality, she doesn't stop at anything, and is blunt. The book is also in Utah, which is cool, well I guess Utah's not my favorite. The book was never boring, even when it wasn't when anyone was in danger. Keeps the attention. If this happened to me, I don't think I could do it, or I would be so stressed, and have a heart attack about. It's a good book!
I finally got around to reading this publication after having read the original, title Idle Playgrounds, multiple times.
The two version are very different. There are a few scenes that remain the same, but not many. If you don't read this version, you'll be pretty confused/bothered about some inconsistencies between the Idle Playgrounds story and the happenings that are references in the later books in the series.
I'm honestly not sure I really like this version better, but it probably fits the characters, etc better.
I am a HUGE fan of Sheralyn Pratt, and she did not disappoint in this addition to her series! From the very first page I was gripped... partially by the story, partially because of the characters. I LOVE her characters! Each and every one are so realistic and dynamic! I KNOW them! Or rather people I know who are like those characters! I'm dying to get the next one to find out what's going to happen next! I would recommend to anyone and everyone!!
Buckle UP - this ride is intense! SO much happens, especially in the last few chapters, that you're catching your breath in the end. She reveals more of the heart behindher characters, which packs a serious punch in the end. Pratt delivers a believable nail-biter, a fun, fantastic and harrowing romp, and an ending that busts the story wide open! C'mon books 4, 5, and 6!!! This series (you seriously can't read just one) makes a perfect escape just just about anybody - Get It!
I love this series, but this book was a little disappointing. It became a little convoluted about 2/3 of the way through and I just couldn't take it. I had to struggle through about 75 pages before it got to the good part again
Read the first two books first and then this one. You won't understand half of what's going on if you don't. The first two books moved very quickly as where this one slowed down for awhile. The ended was good.
I LOVED this new edition of book 3! Pratt's growth as an author shows in her skillful edit of the original, packing a tighter punch while giving even more content to love. She manages to throw us in the middle of all the twists and turns without losing us along the way. It's a Fantastic ride, with a phenomenal ending - Buckle up and start turning the pages!
OH MY!! I kinda liked the first book, the 2nd was really good and this one was just AMAZING!!! It's Thanksgiving and I'm supposed to be with family and I can't quit reading.... I just couldn't put it down today, I read the whole thing in 7 hours... I'm soo glad that I already have the 4th book, so I can jump right into what happens next.... Thanks Sheralyn!
This is a good series--scary, fast moving, a little bit of a love story. Now I have to find the 4th book in the series.
I wish, though, that Bonneville Books would find a good proofreader. There are quite a few left out words, misspelled words, words in the wrong order, etc. in these books. It kind of bugs me.
Sheralyn Pratt's City Limits is another fun, thriller story about Rhea Jensen. Rhea is a young, tough private detective who is also opening up to the Morman religion. City Limits shows Rhea's growth and also shows the author's growth in producing tight plots.
