Don’t listen to the stories they tell you about Fear Street. Wouldn’t you rather explore it yourself…and see if its dark terrors and unexplained mysteries are true? You’re not afraid, are you?
Don’t open that present!
If only Reva Dalby had listened to that warning.
But beautiful, cold Reva won’t listen to anyone. Reva thinks she can have whatever—and whoever—she wants. After all, her daddy owns Dalby Department Stores.
Now, someone has some surprises instore for her. Robbery? Terror? Even murder? Someone wants to treat Reva to a holiday she’ll never forget.
Holiday cheer quickly turns to holiday chills for Reva. Someone is stalking her, someone is trying to get to her.
Her money can’t help her. No one can.
After all, who can you turn to when murder comes gift-wrapped?

Reva starts out as such a bitch, but I enjoyed seeing why she was that way and her character arc. I didn't guess who was doing what, the mean jokes, the murder...so that was nice. Really enjoyed it over-all.
I can't decide on 3.5 or 4. I read this in my youth but all I could remember was Reva is rich and sweaters. Ugh Reva! Karma is going to smack her one day and it won't be pretty. I didn't remember who was the bad guy in the story and there was some surprises along the way. this is my 2nd favorite out of the fear street books I've re-read so far. (missing is #1, it's bat shit crazy and has everything in it!)
This was so disappointing! I was hoping this trilogy would be similar to Halloween Night and its sequel (also from R.L. Stine, but from Point Horror rather than Fear Street) but this was pretty whack. I loved the first half but things quickly went downhill. I was confused about why the book had a "Part Two"-type thing to begin with, but in retrospect, that was pretty much the turning point to where this got insultingly stupid. This book needed more Reva and less of the other geeks. There also just weren't enough Christmas vibes. I'll still read the second one next year or something because I do wanna enjoy more of Reva and the Dalby Department Store, but golly, this was pretty dumb.
Not bad, but not the best Fear Street Super Chiller out there. I think the book going from Reva to Pam was a mistake. It felt like two stories got folded into one and neither of them were told very well.
"Silent Night #1" (yes dear readers there are two more to go) follows teen Reva. Reva's father is very rich and she doesn't have to work if she doesn't want to. However, she's helping out at one of his department stores during the Christmas break. Reva uses this time to play "pranks" on other kids from Shadyside High. But someone seems out to get Reva and things keep happening to her. When a body shows up, it looks like someone is out to get her.
Reva is awful. I love that Stine has you hate her throughout the book until she gets the realization that no one likes her. Pam let's everyone step all over her. I wanted to feel badly for her, but she gets involved in something that had me questioning her critical thinking skills.
The book's flow slows down a lot I thought. We just jump back and forth between Reva and Pam and you start to wonder what is going on.
The ending was sloppy in my opinion. I just let it go though.
I remember this particular Fear Street being among my favorites as a kid, but I don't know why. Reading it again now was definitely fun; I honestly miss these books. They may be simplistic, but they just don't make them like this anymore.
This is the second book I've read so far since I decided to re-read my "horror series" childhood favorites, and once again I only had vague memories. It was kind of nice to not remember how this would end!
I loved this book, and it has definitely been my favorite Fear Street read thus far. Reva is so delightfully mean in a classic "mean girl" type of way, but there is more to her behavior than meets the eye. Honestly, I couldn't help but like her as the story went on. This book had a great mystery to it, and I liked how everything unfolded. I also enjoyed the Christmas imagery! I would definitely recommend reading this around the holidays as it was super thematic.
Reva's Christmas is about to be anything but cheerful. Someone's playing cruel pranks on her, but with all the people she's angered it's hard to know who's behind them.
Pam, Reva's cousin, has plans of her own to get revenge. But she quickly realizes just how out of her league she is when her revenge plans go horribly wrong.
More of a thriller / murder mystery but a good Christmas read all the same! Being a super chiller it's a bit longer which i really liked. R. L. Stine also managed to mask the culprit pretty well.
Not to mention it's hard to beat that old department store nostalgia this one brought on for those who had parents that would drag them to those stores as kids. I resembled one of the kids running through the store and then tugging on my mom's sweater to beg for the latest toys lol.
All hail Queen Reva, the nastiest, meanest, cruelest, stuck-up bitch you love to hate 🤣🤣The ultimate Mean Girl who breaks up with her boyfriend just to watch him get emotional so she can mock him and kick him to the curb (quite literally, she throws him out of her car), and the disdainful prima donna who denies her cousin Pam a job at her dad's fancy department store because SHE IS POOR and Reva doesn't deign to have her "poor, tacky cousin" lurking about, making her feel guilty!! 😭😭
Anyway with a bitch like this, she's bound to have enemies galore...and some may even want her DEAD 💀💀💀She starts getting weird and gross gifts at her dad's department store where she is working for the holiday. Like a bottle of blood that she drops and it splatters all over her (gross) and maybe a dead body or two...NBD. But WHO is after her, she wails, and WHY? (BECAUSE YOU'RE AN EVIL BITCH REVA, AND EVERYONE HATES YOU) 🤣🤣🤣
It was fun to have a horrible protagonist who is SUCH A VILLIAN as it made it fun to hate her guts 🤣🤣 This Super Chiller had it all...murder, mayhem, shoplifting AND grand theft, a double crossing and some callous boyfriend stealing. And it takes place at a department store, I LOVE MALL HORROR SO MUCH YOU GUYS. 🙌🏼🛍💀
4 out of 5 stabs in the back to that one dude you thought was kinda cute, but ended up being a total wimp because he was hung up on his drippy girlfriend. See ya later, its been real! 👋💀
Eeek! This book is proof that I need to take a trip to Fear Street for more nostalgia fun once I complete my tour of the original Goosebumps series! I mean it starts out with a tiny sharp razor blade in someone's lipstick... YES!
But I really do wanna know how seasonal QUEEN Reva Dalby is out here handing out jobs at her dad's store left and right at her age and without any background checks or drugs tests. Like... slay, boss girl! She said, "Get your ass TO WORK!"
Another fantastic Stine seasonal read! Each time I read one I think what it would’ve felt like reading these at their “intended” age if I’m so in love with them as an adult! Definitely going to continue on reading more of these gems!
3.25 stars. very fun to read, but still bit too tame at the beginning. some of the scares (at first!) were based on the "it's just a prank/misunderstanding" formula, which got annoying. thankfully the second half was so much better. the fact that it was set in a big store around christmas time was perfect. the cast of characters was a mixed bag, most of them were pretty immature and i didn't care for their childish shenanigans, but i also didn't hate them. reva started out as super obnoxious, but gained my sympathy at the end. i'll definitely keep reading the fear street series.
This book lives up to what I remember when I was younger this author never fails to write an amazing horror story. I loved the characters so very much but the one that stood out the most to me was Reva she started out as the worst mean girl and became so much more by the end. Although Reva was your typical mean girl she had other layers that made her an amazingly well written MC she actually developed so much by the end. I loved the plot it had a great twisty mystery that was great to read I also loved how the plot split off into two parts one with Reva and the strange things going on around her and with Pam and the planning of doing something illegal which won't go wrong right. So overall I loved this book I will eventually go back and finish the trilogy of this story.
"EVERYONE HATES YOU, REVA." “Anyone could have sent you those things. You don’t have a friend in the world, Reva. Everyone hates you. Everyone. I can think of ten people who hate you enough to put a needle in your lipstick.” 😂🪡💄👄
Someone is playing mean and cruel jokes to frighten Reva Darby.. first, the needle in her lipstick, a perfume bottle filled with blood, a bloody mangled mannequin inside a box, robbery in their store, and possible murder.
Fun read..like it more than I expected and though the main character is such a shit show, I still want to keep on reading and invested in what other surprise awaits her.😬 I'll continue with part 2 and 3 then that being the case. 😂
3.5 The second half saved the book for me. Pretty predictable overall, but maybe because I am used to R L Stine's formula. The first half was slow and boring, at least for me.
3.5* ... This was pretty okay for a Fear Street book. Didn't really feel too much like a Christmas story, but still fun nonetheless. A slightly creepy, quick holiday read. Glad I added it to my Christmas tbr this year.
SILENT NIGHT is about a morally repugnant girl named Reva who does shitty things to others and has cruel jokes played on her in return. Can’t say I feel bad for her. From her casual disregard to anyone else’s well-being except her own, her lack of caring in doing her job, openly playing with the relationships of others, and her overwhelming selfishness, Reva’s pretty much an impossible character to like. Of course she’s practically the main character.
There’s also Pam, Reva’s cousin, who Reva shits on for seemingly no reason. All she wants is a job at the department store Reva works at/her dad owns and since Reva’s handing out jobs anyway, why not give one to her cousin? Nope. Sorry. None left. Because that would mean Reva would need to look at poor, literally, Pam and feel bad about herself and that can’t happen.
Things start happening, like a needle being stuck in Reva’s lipstick and Reva getting sent a perfume bottle filled with blood. And then bigger things. Like a robbery. And blackmail. And then people start dying. It’s anarchy!
Like most Fear Street books, SILENT NIGHT is ridiculous. It wouldn’t have been half as bad if it weren’t for the totally unlikeable main character, Reva. I mean, I guess she has a little bit of a redemption arc, but too little, too late. She sucks. But, points for death by Christmas tree. If nothing else, Stine sure knows how to kill his characters rather creatively.
Be sure to check out my recap of SILENT NIGHT going up over at The Devil’s Elbow on the 23rd!
If you've seen Riverdale, picture Cheryl Blossom in the lead role of Reva Dalby in Silent Night: an evil, spoiled, rich redhead wrecking havoc on her friends' lives - and then being messed with in return. The book was ridiculous; over-the-top; and filled with unlikable characters. Not a good holiday read. Not a good read at all! Although I could see it as a Christmas sub-plot in Riverdale.
Reva Dalby is the most despicable character in Fear Street and I love it! She's got no redeeming qualities but in such a way that you just love to hate her. I really enjoyed the setting and story and even though the reveal wasn't 'fair play' I still didn't mind it. This is a book I always enjoy returning to each holiday season for a quick dose of festive Fear Street fun.
This was a really fun, quick read! This wasn't anything groundbreaking or anything, but that's what I loved about it! Just an entertaining, cheesy story with a good mystery and twists! I am really looking forward to reading more Fear Street books!!
A very long time ago did I read this book and only one scene always stood out but the rest was vague except for the fact that Reva Dalby is the worst person in all of Shadyside with its psychopaths and suffers of mental disorders brought on by PTSD.
Reva is still interesting even if she is so horrible but you can kind of understand...some of her behavior. Her mother died three years ago and that can shut down part of your emotions and she isn't awful to her dad or her little brother...just a normal teenage daughter and older sister.
I can see why Stine liked writing about her.
Reva's father owns Dalby's Department stores all over so she is rich and spoiled, vain and self-centered. She uses guys like Kleenex, judges everyone by their looks and she's basically the OG Mean Girl...makes Regina George look like a novice.
She just broke up with Hank Davis and he didn't take it well, angry but still clueless, after dating for six months. Reva makes the guy walk home in the cold snow...Hanks probably warmer than being in the car with the ice queen.
Reva's dad asks his daughter if she can recruit some of the Shadyside High kids to work part time jobs at the store stocking and then go full-time once they are on Christmas vacation. Reva has one person in mind, Mitch Castelona.
She calls Mitch to offer him a job and he's happy to take it and wonders if his girlfriend, Lissa Dewey, could have one too. Reva says sure but she plans on trying to break them up and tells Lissa she'll be working perfume so show up in something nice.
Reva runs into Robb Spring and she decides to give him a job. He's a nice guy but a little overweight or a "chub" as Reva puts it. She says she can give him a customer representative job, all suit and tie like her dad. Oh his job will involve a suit...
Lissa arrives and is embarrassed to be told by the supervisor that she's over dressed and to go home and change. Robb arrives and is given a Santa suit to wear...Reva says he'll be perfect since he needs no padding to fill it out.
That's three people right there but wait...there's even more people in line to hate Reva.
The only member of the Dalby family that Reva treats like dirt is her cousin Pam. Blonde, congenial and pretty Pam who still has her mother to talk to...Reva is jealous but not obvious to that fact.
Pam calls her cousin and asks if she could have a job at Dalby's. Reva lies and tells her that she's too late and all the jobs are taken. Too bad.
Pam goes to hang out with her friend Mickey Wakely and his trouble making friend Clay Parker at the 7-11. The owner accuses Clay of shoplifting and he doesn't like being called a liar so he beats up the owner and the three of them escape the police.
It feels good to be bad until Pam learns that her uncle fired Mickey's dad from his security job for drinking on the job. She's sympathetic until Clay tells her that Mitch and Lissa got jobs.
Chalk up one more Reva hater as well as Mickey not having any soft spot for the Dalbys, especially Reva's dad.
Clay has an idea about robbing Dalby's and soon another security guard named Maywood, a friend of Mickey's dad, is more than happy to let them waltz in and take some goods. He'll throw the alarm once they are done and both Mickey and Pam think it will be kind of fun to stick it to Reva and her dad even if it is Pam's uncle.
I mean...why didn't he offer his own niece a job? Nepotism but still he could have gone over Reva's head...he gave his daughter a job...right?
Well pretty soon Reva isn't enjoying her job (like she was so thrilled about it before) when creepy things begin to happen to her...cruel jokes to give her a taste of her own medicine. While Reva is being terrorized, Pam and her friends go through with the robbery but it doesn't go as planned when a different security guard catches them.
Clay brought a gun just in case but he admits it wasn't loaded but the news the next day says that a guard was killed and twenty-five thousand in bills were taken from the store safe. Someone soon starts calling Pam and threatening that he'll tell on them to the police...he saw what they did.
Is the creep the same person going after both Dalby cousins? Pam always wanted to be like Reva but who could be so ruthless to threaten her? Reva's list of enemies is longer than Santa's nice list and Reva's been really naughty lately...
What creepy gift could be waiting in Reva's stocking this Christmas? One she'll wish she could return to sender but it definitely won't be from Santa Claus...
The book is more of then murder-mystery/thriller type but it does have some scenes that make it a Christmas horror. Not too big a spoiler since the book is thirty plus years old but you'll never go without checking your lipstick before applying, ladies, ever again after reading...
Believe me I was even checking my Dr. Pepper flavored Lip Smackers it made that much of an impression.
The first in a trilogy and if you've never read Silent Night, it's a high recommendation. Especially if it is R.L. Stine recommended.
4.5/5 This was a lot of fun! I absolutely despised Reva’s character. She is everything that I hate in a person. I couldn’t wait to see how everyone would try to get back at her. I like how there were two storylines going on that intermingled perfectly in the end. The twist was very unexpected and a lot of the story had me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next and who would be doing those things. R.L. Stine always doing what he does best and I live for it.
