Stella’s little brother Sam stars in this delightful new picture book by Marie-Louise Gay. "I’ll help you get dressed," said Stella. "No," said Sam. "I can do it by myself." But Sam takes a roundabout route to getting dressed and, as usual, his big sister Stella is there to help… but this time Sam has the last laugh. Vibrant and humorous, Marie-Louise Gay’s stories and pictures explore the endearing, intimate scenes of young childhood.
3.5 stars & 4/10 hearts. I think this one is my favourite book to read aloud to my siblings. It’s just so FUN! The tones and inflexions are so fun to play on and change up each time I read it. It’s such a simple book, but so true-to-life and just plain fun. Reading it aloud properly really brings it to life, and by changing up your tone each time you change the story a little. Try it! It’s grand fun. ;)
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘Stella! Now my shoes are lost!’ “‘Did you look everywhere, Sam?’ “‘Yes,’ said Sam. “‘Did you look in the closet?’ asked Stella.”
This children's book may seem to be about clothing, but it has a whole lot to say about:
* Power struggles between Sam and his big sister Stella. * Trying really hard to learn a new skill. * Developing the best relationships these two kids can manage, at this time in their lives.
In this episode of growing up, Sam does have the last laugh.
FIVE STARS for originality in a picture book and also for the illustrations, which I'd call sensitive yet sturdy. Both these treats come from Marie-Louise Gay.
Stella offers to help her little brother Sam get dressed, but he wants to do it himself. Funny story showing how much Sam really needs his sister's help, and a funny ending, especially for Sam. Great illustrations.
Stella wakes up her little brother Sam and asks if he needs help getting dressed. Sam assures her he does not but then asks for help on item of clothing. Where are his underpants? He's lost a sock. Does Stella know where his shoes are? Finally Sam is ready to go outside, after being reminded to put on his pants. Sam then has the opportunity to point out to Stella that she's forgotten to get dressed at all!
Told in sparse text with simplistic illustrations, a sure-fire giggle fest will ensue when read to young children.
Sam with his dandelion fluff hair and cheery face is Stella's baby brother (Stella of the wonderful Stella books by Marie-Louise Gay) has adventures just getting up and dressed in the morning, especially when a little dog is helping him. The illustrations in this book are just blissful. A good read for parents, too, who forget in their irritated morning rush, what fun a slow wakey, pokey morning can be.
Young Sam prepares himself for school in the morning. However, as independent as Sam would like to be, he just can't seem to do get completely ready without the help of Stella. Use text-to self connections with this book to have students think of what they can do in the morning themselves and what do they still need help to do. this is a good read for pre-k to first graders
Sam and Stella are adorable! This is a very cute, very short little story about Stella "helping" Sam get ready for the day, and I think most preschoolers can appreciate the touches of humor in the dialogue and illustrations.
Sam and Stella are back! In this little adventure, Sam informs Stella that he can get dressed ALL BY HIMSELF! His attempts to do this are very funny and it's endearing to see the two siblings interact with kindness.
toddler and early preschoolers who find the business of getting dressed and ready for the day an important responsibility... and still need a little help will appreciate this book.
Stella must help Sam get ready in the morning and he takes his time. But in the end it's Sam who must remind Stella that she's not fully dressed. Cute book.
I think this book is good for teaching students that sometimes it's ok to ask for help. Students can learn from this that they can't always do everything alone.
Loved this book! I thought that it was super sweet and I loved the relationship demonstrated between Sam and his sister. Also loved what his pet dog did to help him get ready. Haha adorable!
This is the first "Stella" book I've read to my son. We might have found this one funnier if we had been better acquainted with the characters. Still, it was a cute book.
Sam wants to get dressed all by himself but he constantly needs Stella's help and did he forget something in the end? Okay. Didn't love the underwear bit.
