This was a good basic introduction to Xerxes.There is an emphasis on the Greek campaign and the battles of Salamis and Thermopylae.It also included brief details about Xerxes education,Persian court life,his relationship with his father and wives.The book was well written but I couldn't really grasp who Xerxes was.There were few personnel details that would make him more real to the reader.His personality as written here seemed to only consist of revenge,rage and disappointment.I am not in any way trying to suggest Xerxes was a happy king because he was not but the portrait just wasn't well rounded to me.
I can, however, say that the book did offer me some information concerning his death and I found it surprising.I also was intrigued by the many paintings,illustrations and photographs.I want to add as well that this is a YA book.
