Seattle is home to a wealth of fabulous hikes, and 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Seattle shows you the best of the best. There are few places anywhere that can match the varied landscape of Western Washington, and 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Seattle is the perfect guide to it all. From the heights of the Cascade Range to the shores of Puget Sound, local hikes explore ancient trees, thundering waterfalls, towering peaks, and ice-clad volcanoes, some of the most enduring symbols of the region. But 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Seattle also leads to many lesser-known but equally accessible and spectacular destinations, including high bluffs and tide pools along the Pacific, abandoned mines and railways that explore Washington's rich pioneer history, and even stands of old-growth forest well inside the Seattle city limits. From short walks in neighborhood parks to epic mountain treks, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Seattle has something for everyone, on some of the best trails the Pacific Northwest has to offer.
We have hiked a handful of these trails now. Sadly each hike left me disappointed. Not with the trail and beautiful scenery itself, but with how the book portrayed major aspects of the trails like waterfalls and outlooks. A view of Snoqualmie falls was barely seeing it through a stand of trees, and it was at least 15 miles away. An outlook was a bench looking out at what would probably be a nice view except it was totally blocked by large fir trees. A cascading waterfall was a stream that fell perhaps 12 inches from one rock to another. I was getting frustrated, but I couldn't decide whether I should be frustrated with myself for picking the hikes, or with the book for portraying them one way on one page and then explaining that the outlook was actually nominal at best on another page. Finally I found myself searching out trails on the Washington Trail Association website where I could find color pictures and reviews from other hikers. I think this book will be a secondary resource at best from now on.
This is a decently comprehensive summary of hiking routes close to Seattle. Where the book falls short, though (and why I docked a star), is that the author falls into what seems to be a common hiker's fallacy of wanting to drive to every hike. Certainly the overwhelming majority of the hikes do require a car, but a number of them are in urban areas and transit-accessible (and this is ignoring the ones that are now accessible via King County Metro's Trailhead Direct service in the summer that postdates the book's publication) and the author even bemoans the lack of parking capacity rather than pointing out alternatives to driving.
Overall it's a handy guide but hopefully the author will include non-driving information in a subsequent edition.
Excellent hiking guide book. 60 trails around a 60 mile radius of Seattle, Washington. The trails highlighted are varied, from urban trails, to mountain hikes. We have discovered a few good ones to add to our ever growing hiking trail list. : )
A great rundown of local Seattle hikes divided by location, but also organized by distance, type, view, etc. A one-place stop for the information without toggling between different apps and websites. Worth the investment.
This book offers so many reviews of local Seattle area hikes. A definite good purchase for anyone wanting to see more of what the outdoors has to offer.
