A classic of contemporary Catalan literature, and a haunting and satirical portrait of a vanishing age, Llorenç Villalongas The Dolls Room concerns the decline of Don Toni and Dona Maria Antònia Bearn: aristocrats, cousins, husband and wife, and members of the decadent, age-old ruling class of the town that bears their name. Their story is told by the naïve family priest, ...more

A Catalan classic, this novel from the 1950s is a triumph of arch elegance, set in the Victorian era and written with a modernist bent. The live-in priest of a fading aristocratic couple relates episodes from their tumultuous lives, a compendium of amusing anecdote, erudition, and travelogue. The writers skill for charming dialogue, entertaining digressions, and rendering scenes in laconic chapters, make the novel a winner. ...more

So, heres something that made me smirk a bit. This is a part of Dalkeys Catalan Literature Series which in part makes a bit of sense as the novel is set on the island of Majorca (where Catalan is the official language) and Llorenç Villalonga did both speak and write Catalan, but, BUT, this book was originally written and published in Spanish (at the time Catalan was banned by decree of Franco). It was later translated into Catalan, and the translator has chosen here to translate that version ...more

I l'he gaudit.

One of those 20th Century books about the nobility of the 19th century, The Dolls Room will fit in nicely on the bookshelf of anybody who likes to read about 19th century aristocracy and wants something off the beaten track; this is especially true for fans of The Leopard, by Giuseppe di Lampedusa, which was published two years after this book. For those who run said bookshelves with geographic pride, The Dolls Room is unique in that it is set in Majorca, giving people an insight into an island ...more

Excellent book. You might be misled that this is a thriller/mystery story. In fact, this novel entangles philosophy, politics and religion to depict a far greater setting than the Bearn mansion and Mallorka. This is a story about Europe in a time of turmoil; about the battle between the old and the new order and their reconciliation.

At the beginning you really can't imagine what an amazing book it is.

Maybe something was lost in translation? Or maybe I was reading it for the wrong reasons - looking for Mallorcan history and getting instead a whole lot of philosophizing. A working knowledge of French would also have been helpful.

A beautiful story of devotion, love for philosophy and science, religion with a humorous side to it. While reading, I felt I was almost gliding through the pages ... One of the best books I've read in a long time.

¿No mos pareixia ridícules?
