When Blessed Are The Blood Mares was published in 1978, no other single source existed that contained such a wide range of information on the care of the breeding of mare from mating, through gestation, to foaling and nursing, and on the care of the young horse. Now there is: the second edition of this classic.
Sadly, even the second edition is now out of date, but there still is good information for anyone stuck with a pregnant mare and actually cares about the mare and foal's health. I read the second edition back when it was first published in the 1990s. I managed to lose my horse book collection due to life's twists and turns but recently managed to get a first edition for about 50 cents.
Nice glossary in the back, which helps laymen decipher the terms used by their veterinarians. Lose mixes her case histories with facts to help hammer home her points on taking care of mares and foals. Some of her stories can be nightmarish at times. Perhaps not so stunning to the reader will be the great contrast between stories of how breeders treat their horses and how Lose recommends horses be treated. For example, Jockey Clubs require all thoroughbreds have their birthdays on January 1 -- no matter when they were actually born. This makes for lots of health problems since horses naturally foal in spring and summer and not on January 1.
This book is a great reference book to have on hand if you are going to breed your mare or you have a pregnant mare or you've had 100 pregnant mares. It is full of valuable information from the pregnancy to foaling, to the mare and foal. There is a lot of information about problems that may occur. Great book to have on hand to refer to.
This is one book that everyone who is considering breeding their mare should read. Very informative without being condescending, you'll learn more or less everything that you need to know about breeding to labor to foaling and potential problems.
