Reading Victor Navasky’s memoir is like entering another world, a world where Democrat Ed Koch isn’t just less liberal than his fellow Democrats, but is a neo-conservative. A world of Binkys and Hams and Pings summering in Martha’s Vineyard. As you might expect of a publisher/editor/teacher/scholar, Navasky is an excellent writer. He's even able to make this memoir of a magazine fascinating (at least to me). "The Nation" is America's oldest weekly publication, dating to 1865, and has always been a liberal journal of opinion. It's also always been on the verge of collapse, and Navasky's story of the continual battle to raise the money to keep it going is really good. Victor Saul Navasky (born July 5, 1932) is an American journalist, editor, publisher, author and professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
