About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

This will be the first book I'll be saving if a bookshelf is on fire.

Hands down, THE BEST book Sujatha has ever written. The best thing a work of art can do is to preserve the lives of people during a particular era and render it imperishable through its lines. And Srirangathu Kadhaigal does that and more. A transcendental collection of 34 stories. Not one of the stories in this book is forgettable and that is the biggest praise you can ever heap on a collection of stories.

Srirangathu Kalaigal preserves not only the culture of that town during the 50s & 60s, it paints an indelible picture of its denizens, their way of life, their language - the beautiful, extinct vocabulary, their arts, their religion, their food - it is like an entire town packed into one book with all its fierce idiosyncrasies and authenticity that has now eroded to give way to our 21st century materialism.

It's rare to find a great book that truly moves you. Srirangathu Kadhaigal uproots you from whatever physical plane of existence you are in and suspends you in the Srirangam of 1960s.

I can barely contain my enthusiasm now on having finished this great book. I'll be rereading this multiple times and cherish this amazing book for years to come.

1974ல் இருந்து 2003ம் ஆண்டு வரை ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தை மையமாகக் கொண்டு சுஜாதா எழுதிய 34 சிறுகதைகளின் தொகுப்பு இந்தப் புத்தகம். சுஜாதா என்னதான் இவை ஒன்றோடு ஒன்று தொடர்பில்லாத கதைகள் என்று கூறினாலும், பல்வேறு கதா பாத்திரங்கள் வெவ்வேறு கதைகளில் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் வருவார்கள். சுஜாதாவின் தங்கை வத்ஸலா, பால்ய நண்பர்கள் கேவி, ரங்கு, நாணு, மற்றும் பத்பநாப ஐயங்கார், வரதன், போன்ற பலர் வெவ்வேறு கதைகளில் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் வருவார்கள்.

இந்தக் கதைகளில் உள்ள விசேஷம் உண்மைகளில் கதையும், கதையில் உண்மையும் எளிதாக, ஒரு வித தடையுமின்றி கலக்கப்பட்டுள்ள லாவகம். ஸ்ரீரங்கத்துக் கதைகள் சுஜாதாவின் பால்ய நினைவுக் குறிப்புகளிலிருந்து உருவான சிறப்பான கதைகள். சுஜாதா ஒத்துக்கொள்ளாவிட்டாலும் இந்தப் புத்தகம் ஆங்கிலத்தில் memoir என்று கூறப்படும் வகையில்தான் சேர்க்கப் பட வேண்டும்.

சுஜாதாவின் ஸ்ரீரங்கத்து தேவதைகள் சிறுகதைகள் தொகுப்பு மிகவும் அழகான ஒன்று. இக்கதைகள் எந்த திடீர் திருப்பங்களையோ அதிரடி சம்பவங்களையோ கொண்டிருக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் ஒவ்வொரு கதையும் ஒரு அமைதியான நிறைவுடன் முடிந்து, “நான் ஒரு நல்ல கதையை வாசித்தேன்” என்ற திருப்தியை நமக்கு தருகிறது.

இந்தக் கதைகளைப் படிக்கும்போது என் பள்ளி நாட்கள் நினைவுக்கு வந்தது. அந்நாட்களில் நான் வார இதழ்கள், மாத இதழ்கள் என அனைத்தையும் தவறாமல் வாசித்திருப்பேன். அவற்றில் வரும் சில உண்மை சம்பவங்கள் வாழ்வின் சின்னச் சின்ன தத்துவங்களை நமக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டியபோல, இந்தக் கதைகளும் வாழ்க்கையின் உண்மைகளை மென்மையாக வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன.

பெரிய ஆடம்பரமோ, ஆழமான கதாபாத்திரங்களோ இல்லை; ஆனால் நம்மைச் சுற்றியிருக்கும் சாதாரண மனிதர்கள், அவர்களது அனுபவங்கள், நாள்தோறும் நிகழும் நிகழ்வுகள் இவற்றின் சுவாரஸ்யத்தைச் சுஜாதா மிக எளிமையாகச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.

நம் தினசரி வாழ்க்கையை பிரதிபலிக்கும், சிந்தனைக்குத் தூண்டும் சிறுகதைகளை விரும்புபவர்கள் தவறாமல் ஸ்ரீரங்கத்து தேவதைகள் புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கலாம் என்று நான் மனப்பூர்வமாக பரிந்துரைக்கிறேன்.

சுஜாதா தன் இளமை பருவத்தில் தான் வாழ்ந்த ஊரில் தனக்கு கிடைத்த அனுபவங்களையும், மனதில் நிலைத்து நின்ற மனிதர்களையும், நெஞ்சில் நீங்கா இடம் பெற்ற நிகழ்ச்சிகளையும் தொகுத்து ஊரின் வர்ணணையுடன் எழுதிய சிறுகதைகள்.

பெரும்பாலான கதைகள் நாம் கடந்து வந்த பழைய நண்பர்களையும், பெயர் மட்டுமே தெரிந்த நல்ல ஆனால் பழக்கமில்லா மனிதர்களையும், பாதித்த நிகழ்ச்சிகளையும், மற்றவர்கள் சொல்லி கேட்ட கதைகளையும் நினைவூட்டும்.

சமுதாயம் என்பது நல்ல, கெட்ட, ஏமாறும், ஏமாற்றும், பாவமான, பாவம்போல போன்ற பல குணாதிசயங்கள் கொண்ட மனிதர்களால் ஆனது.

I remember when I read this book - on a train ride from pudukkottai to chennai. This is one of those books that you can read again and again and again. what a great writer. these are characters you can relate to. as someone who knows trichy well it was easy for me to relate to this story. We are lucky to have lived in the same era as Sujatha. If he was born in the western world, he would be a far more celebrated writer.

A pack of entertaining short stories with Srirangam(situated near Trichy, TN) as the backdrop. Offers a sneak peak into the lives of Brahmins, who are the predominant habitants in and around Srirangam, their language, lifestyle and what-not. Assures a joyous read.

அமரர் சுஜாதாவின் முத்திரைக் கதைகள். ஹாஷ்யம், காதல் மட்டுமன்றி இடையிடையே கவலை என்று ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு கோணத்தில் அவரின் பிறந்தமண்ணை, ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தை வலம் வந்து நம் மனதை ஆக்கிரமிக்கும் எழுத்துக்கள். அவரின் படைப்புகள் அனைத்துக்கும் சிகரம் வைத்தாற்போல் நிச்சயம் வாசிக்கவேண்டிய சிறுகதைத்தொகுப்பு!

Though many of the stories in this book form part of Srirangathu Devadhaigal, it was as interesting as it as in Srirangathu Devadhaigal. The reality and imagination seamlessly blending in the writings is the beauty in Sujatha's writings, the reader never knows which part of the stories have real information and which of those have the author's imaginations. A very nice and a quick read altoghether
