October 30, 2023Borrowed this a few years ago, but after the quilt show in West Monroe, I wanted to look through again and see if there were any templates or projects to inspire me.
This one had several cute projects, but the example quilts were too dark to see details.
I also want to get her “It’s raining cats and dogs” book.
(This is also the author who lived on Vashon Island.)
Liked: Jazz Cats (cover), Kittleson’s Cats, Hunter’s Cats and Four Brown Cats (both made with log cabins), Sampler Cats (Sample quilt was way too dark in the book to see details though), Noel, The Motley Crew and FireCats (Using a fan type block, which was cute. The book samples didn’t have enough contrast to show details though), Stealth (interlocking cat heads ala clamshell style).

A friend loaned this book to me because she knows I love cats.
It was published in 1994 and is kind of like going back in time to read it.
The author talks about "speed cutting" and "speed piecing". She explains why a person might want to use a rotary cutter rather than trace templates. The speed piecing involves the stitch and flip method rather than tracing a template and attaching 2 traced pieces.
My friend was right that I would like this book. I like the kitties on the cover who sit side by side with their tails entwined. That block will definitely make it into one of my quilts!

I found this for free at the library and pounced. I'm really glad I did. There are so many fun cat blocks in this book, with different techniques and skill levels. Some look a bit dated but changing up the fabric should fix that. I think I'm most excited about the Puss In Bonnets pattern--think Sunbonnet Sue but cats! Too cute. I only wish there were templates for all of the blocks because I am not very good with a rotary cutter.

Several variations on cat- form pieced blocks, with one puppy pieced block, and a 'puss in a bonnet' that looks like a 'little dutch girl' with a tail. The Siamese cat and the fan cat blocks would do nicely in a broad variety of colors.

Not only does this author show us many examples and variants, she provides patterns and templates, material estimates, and tips on assembly and quilting in general. If you know how to thread and operate your sewing machine, she gives you everything else you need to know.

I was looking for cat quilt patterns and this fit the need. It has several patterns at different levels and I've been able to take a few to design the cat pattern needed for the quilt. If you're looking for cat patterns, this pattern book will help!

"This must be my favorite quilting pattern book because I have made so many of these quilts!"
