this is a useful and accessible guide book to bumblebees of the UK and Ireland. and a good size for a field guide you might want to take out with you for reference.
I don't think it's an ideal place to start if you're just learning about bumblebees. but if you already have some knowledge, it's a good way to take that further.
the way this guide uses a more symbolic representation of the bees in keys, awa the species listings, is useful - encouraging focus on the proportions and positions of colour bands on the bees, etc.
the only thing I think I'd really liked to have also had is the common names for the bees awa the Latin names. obviously the Latin name gives greater precision when discussing a species that has several common names, and/or discussing with colleagues across countries and languages. but it'd be nice to have the local common names for the bees too, especially as part of a transition from more basic guides about bumblebees.
Ideal for the beginner who wants to identify the bees where they live. Glad I finally got around to reading this book, thanks Lizzy. Now to wait for the sun to come up so I can check out the suspects in the garden.
