Its main guidelines for relevant teaching to nurture future caring world citizens:

1. Know your subject well.
2. Know your students well.
3. Make meaningful connections between the past and the present.
4. Humanities teachers are language teachers and MUST focus on teaching writing with different purpose and audience.

The book motivates to work on relevant connections to stimulate active student engagement.

History Teachers' own accounts of developing a unit that utilizes "big ideas". The first hand perspective is encouraging. I found 3 of the 7 accounts somewhat helpful to me. Ch.2 showcases self-reflection in adjusting a unit over multiple years. Ch.5 shows a method for making writing prompts and some of the highs and lows a teacher can experience. In Ch. 8 the unit develops students' ability to substantiate their arguments with evidence and develops their agency in approaching history.
