Name in Japanese: フクシマハルカ She is a Japanese shōjo manga artist. She made her manga debut in 1999 in Nakayoshi Magazine with her award-winning manga Sakuranbo Kiss. She considers Otona ni Nuts (Instant Teen: Just Add Nuts) to be her masterpiece.
Aoi is the school president of a prestigious middle school and is known as a 'AAA' student. Her school often doesn't see eye to eye with the neighbouring public middle school where the students are known to be delinquents. Coincidently, it turns out Aoi's crush, whom she met during entering exams, ended up in the public school and is even known as the school's delinquent boss!
AAA is one of Fukushima's better attempts, though it's not a sophisticated work, it's cute enough and has a certain entertainment value. The plot is nothing too unusual: the goodie-two-shoes from a fancy school falls for the bad boy. I quite like that neither of them are overly prejudiced against each other and that the whole issue lies more in how others are against it. I'm tempted to say that it had a very light-hearted Romeo & Juliette touch.
I think silly and more comedic manga suit Fukushima better as she always fails to come up with logical conclusions to serious matters. This is also a slight issue in AAA as some of the issues raised are simply left unaddressed: Hayato, the boss delinquent, is an intelligent student who came out on top for the entrance exams, yet he ended up in the public school and absolutely no reason was given. Additionally, a relative of his is introduced halfway through the series and apparently they hate each other but the conflict is never explored nor addressed. On the other hand, I found that this manga had a stronger supporting cast than many of Fukushima's other works. If she had spent more time exploring the side characters or issues other than the romance, this could have been a much stronger story.
As it is, it literally comes down to Aoi and Hayato finding a way to each other. Their relationship is generally cute with typical love-to-hate-you teasing going on. That being said, Aoi is introduced as strong and confident - at least one would expect as much from a head girl - but she's got no backbone whatsoever when it comes to Hayato teasing her. Whenever he teases her, she becomes upset, throws something back at him and marches off - that in itself is fine but the moment she's gone, she wonders whether Hayato is angry with her. If anything, she has a reason to be angry with him and not the other way around, so it was a little tiring after a while.
In terms of art, Fukushima has made a strange development. I'd say her art has improved overall and the girls are cute though very typical shoujo. Where the boys are concerned, I can't say I am impressed at all. She's started giving male characters a strange lidded expression which I believe is meant to make them look cool but to me, it just looks dopey. Also, an ongoing issue I've had with Fukushima is that her characters are often in the younger range of teenagers and I don't really appreciate sexualized scenes for characters that age. However, if you're going to do it, do it properly - and Fukushima doesn't. She likes to draw scenes with shirtless boys but what we end up with are boys wearing skin t-shirts. If you can't draw a naked male torso, don't do it.
It's a shame that this manga has several flawse as I do believe it could have been quite the nice RomCom if it had been done a little better. That being said, I do still think that this is a cute and entertaining enough manga to give a try. Don't expect too much and you may be rewarded with a quick and fun read.
2.5* ok why was i lowkey fangirling over the couple's moments. also there's a lot of shots of her in her bra but aren't they like, 13, so whatup with that. atleast the guy is villified.
I remember liking the story and characters but to think back on the plot I could not tell you anything about it now. Maybe a go back and read again kind of manga.
manga is too easy to figure out right away. You can tell they where going to end up together and fall in love with each other. The story/plot was boring. This Manga is boring simple annoying nice easygoing. I did not like the 2 main characters and the rest of the characters where not needed at all. It's like they where just put there to fill it up. There was no real understanding of anything at all.
She fell in love with a boy for no reason at all. She did not even know him at all. She fell for him just by giving her a pencil WTF OMG.
There was no real school/classes/lessons at all for a school manga.
She let him treat her so badly/bully her and yet she still love him/like it WTF.
The second volume is cute as well. The story moves along nicely, with quite a bit of drama to since things up. Overall it's just a cute slightly twisted story so really my style. I kind of hate how it ended on a cliffhanger though. I need to get the next volume from the library soon.
