[These notes were made in 1989:]. I must say my heart sank when this fairly substantial volume (328 pp.) appeared after I'd read the much smaller selection by John Hewitt. All that the exercise proved was that John Hewitt's principles of selection are certainly not mine. Which is to say that, presented with what appears to be the total corpus of Allingham's work, I am considerably more impressed. He really does have a fine sense of imagery & a musical ear. And I enjoyed both the "story" ball ...more
William Allingham was an Irish poet, diarist and editor. He wrote several volumes of lyric verse, and his poem 'The Faeries' was much anthologised; but he is better known for his posthumously published Diary, in which he records his lively encounters with Tennyson, Carlyle and other writers and artists.More about William Allingham...
