The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, the second volume of the Papercutz series that reprint the original Smurfs stories in graphic novel format, contains the first appearance of the little blue people. The is actually a Johan and Peewit story that feature the Smurfs in a supporting role, but was repackaged as a Smurfs story began to grow in popularity.

It is not much of an introduction to the Smurfs, since the only Smurf with a distinct personality here is Papa Smurf. They don’t level yet in the lush forest as seen in the cartoon, but in the deserted Cursed Land. There would be more changes as the Smurfs world is fleshed out in more detail in the future volumes.

This being my first Smurfs graphic novel, I am reminded by the charm the original cartoon had on me. I’ve always thought it had vibe similar to Disney cartoons of the era. It was something magical. It was a nice read fit for a lazy afternoon in a coffee shop. I wouldn’t have rescued it from a bargain bin if I wasn’t looking for something to read. It was a nice little book to burn a little time away.

Vanhan kuninkaan linnassa on tukalat oltavat.

Children's Book Style = No Phylactere

and barely any art- none being sequential. Only 1-3 panels per page with too many (huge) words that choke the whole thing.

This edition has "Johan et Pirlouit" named "John and William". How Britishly boring. "William" annoyed me tremendously- and not in the endearing way that was intended.

bener2 dobel serunya!!

A thoroughly middling affair, decently drawn and routinely colored with a stock-standard plot and characters to boot. The Smurfs only briefly play into this story yet when they do merely serve as Deus ex Machina to relieve our chief protagonists of their seemingly unresolvable plight by simply copy-pasting the title quest item at issue-- the obvious new problem created thereby being tidily eliminated by the convenient stupidity of one protagonist in the final panel. The lead characters (antagonist included) are admittedly not short on personality but are unfortunately left stunted in development, and all characters are accompanied by dialogue that always feels more perfunctory than profound (hard to know whether that's Peyo's problem or one begot by the translation). The world which these characters inhabit seems bemusingly smaller than it should even if there were details in the more involved panels I found interesting-- those are sadly few and far between. Ultimately, it's not unsalvageable, but there is simply not enough charm here to recommend this particular Smurfs-related tale.

Wow! Fantasmurf! I mean, it's the first book where smurfs ever appeared! Who doesn't like smurfs? I love them, I grew up with them (ok,maybe I didn't grow up), I still read smurf comics and watch smurfs' videos online (the cartoon, not the movie monstrosity!)
I absolutely love them. Smurfing smurftastic!

Smurfs appear half way through the book. Johan and Peeweet are the main characters here and they are quite nice too. Funny story and the characteristic, beautiful drawning add to the pleasure too.
I'm glad such nice comics were around when I was a kid and are still going strong...

This is a smaller republication, by Papercutz, of the original Smurf story. Johan and Peewit see that a merchant comes into their kingdom to sell instruments, but as Peewit is bad at music Johan and the king rush the man out...although out of his carriage drops a magical flute that can make anyone dance.

It's a quest as Peewit takes the flute, uses it and then a pickpocket steals it for himself. I didn't know the Smurfs had their own comic, but this makes me want to read more.

First encounters of the Smurf kind, which explains the Smurf language on a quest by two friends- heroic Johan and the small and feisty Peewit - to retrieve a stole magic flute. A very fascinating story.

Pienistä se pieni ihminen ilostuu. Strumffien ensiesiintyminen. Ei, ne eivät ole smurffeja, strumffeja. Opettele.
Erinomaisen viihdyttävää sarjakuvaa, vähemmän lapsellista kuin muistinkaan.

I love this book - had it as a child but is lost now... borrowed from library. And it was so comfortable like an old blanket, I really love the royal environment and the boys. Smurfs are at their best here!

I didn't even know these comics existed, but happened across it and couldn't resist as I loved the tv series as a child. Don't be put off by the fact that the Smurfs aren't really the main characters in this story. It is more of an introduction to the setting. The story revolves around Peewit and Johan, two boys living in a medieval-type castle who happen upon a magic flute that cause people to dance when it is played. It is stolen by an evil robber and, of course, adventure ensues. Great read, really bright, vibrant illustrations and a good story.

In the second of the series of new Smurf graphic novels, we're gifted with the original story of how people were introduced to them. Although they don't actually appear in the book until three quarters through, the other characters in the book are both entertaining and well drawn. A great story to keep youngsters entertained and enthralled as they learn the story of the Smurfs and the adventures they get themselves into.

Oh man the memories. I've loved the movie since I was a child and I'm so happy to finally read the source. Great story. Johan and Peewit are classic classic characters. It's neat how much of the comic made the translation to the film. I wish NBM would publish the rest of the Johan/Peewit stuff rather than riding the Smurf wave. I'm still happy this stuff is finally getting published. Just... Smurfs are Smurfs while Johan and Peewit are fruit and cake!

This barely made the 3 star cut. The bulk of the story is Smurfless and follows the adventures of Johan and Peewit as they try to reclaim the magical flute. (It makes people dance.) Things picked up when the Smurfs finally showed up. They had some good fun with their confusing language. (Papa Smurf got royally smurfed off when Peewit said he was a smurf.) Also, Johan said "Heavens to Murgatroyd" which has got to be a worth at least a star.

Probably this is the first time Peyo show his most famous work, the Smurfs, in his lesser known work, i.e. Johan et Pierrot - or in this case, Pirlouit. The two heroes, Johan and Pirlouit, have to face an evil guy, Terdesakus, who has plan to take over the kingdom using foreign mercenary, with a little help from the magic flute made by the Smurfs.

Actually, I read this for the first time back in the '80s. Like it then. Still find it a fun read at this present time.

This is the first story the Smurf's appear in! The story is about two friends trying to recover a stolen magic flute, which turns out to have been crafted by the Smurfs; some of the humor reminds me a little of the Asterix comics. Oh, and I guess the new Smurf movie is live-action! (Kind of hard to imagine, actually.....)
