I'm a writer and editor living in Duluth, Minnesota, where I write about arts and entertainment for the Duluth News Tribune. و اما جامعه شناسی.در طول روز بارها - به خصوص هنگام صحبت از مشکلات - از موجودی ناشناخته به نام جامعه حرف می‌زنیم.از جوان بیست ساله گرفته تا پیرزن هفتاد ساله هم هرکدام نظر ویژه خود را درباره این که جامعه چگونه است و چگونه باید باشد دارند.در مورد علمی مثل فیزیک این طور نیست و همین مسئله جامعه شناسی را شایسته آن می‌کند که برایش وقت صرف کنیم.هرچند جای به جای این کتاب از تیغ سانسور ارشاد جان سالم به در نبرده اما همچنان آنفدر اطلاعات خواندنی دارد که ارزش خواندن داشته باشد.در فصول ابتدایی نویسنده سعی می‌کند شما را با کلیات و اهداف این علم آشنا کند و سپس فصل به فصل به موضوعات جالب جامعه شناسی می‌پردازد.طبیعی است که برای مثال درباره جامعه شناسی دین نمی‌توان تنها به یک فصل از کتابی چهارصد صفحه‌ای بسنده کرد اما این کتاب با ارجاعات مناسبی که به منابع دیگر دارد می‌تواند مسیر ادامه مطالعه شما را هم در صورت علاقه‌مندی ترسیم کند.

Written like for kids. This isn't going to be very useful if you'd like a layman's look at sociology, but still want it to be somewhat mature in terms of writing and analysis. This book reads a bit similar to a self-help book, with very simple language. The upside I guess, is that it could be good starter book for kids... just not in "sociology". It fails to cover many key and basic concepts in the subject.

Dans la célèbre collection « pour les Nuls » à couverture jaune et noire, « La Sociologie pour les Nuls" a été rédigé par Jay Grabler pour l'édition originale en anglais et Alexis Trémoulinas pour l'adaptation française. Je parle bien d’adaptation et non de traduction car on sent qu’une partie du texte et notamment le choix certains exemples ont été adaptés pour le lecteur français, ce qui est me semble bienvenu pour un ouvrage de vulgarisation

Cela faisait un moment que je voulais m'intéresser la sociologie en tant que discipline scientifique, qui me semble un complément utile à mon intérêt pour l'histoire et pour la politique. Quand je suis tombé sur ce livre en visitant cette semaine ma médiathèque préférée (c’est-à-dire le plus proche de chez moi), je me suis dit que c'était l'occasion idéale, et je l’ai donc emprunté.

Le résultat a été conforme à mes attentes : c’est un ouvrage de vulgarisation qui prend le lecteur par la main pour lui faire découvrir progressivement son sujet, ici la sociologie.

Après une introduction qui présente l’organisation du livre et les conventions utilisées (notamment les icônes mettant en évidence certains passages), l’ouvrage entre dans le vif du sujet, dont je propose ici une table des matières synthétique avec les principales thématiques abordées :

1ère partie : Le B.A.-B.A. de la sociologie
- définition de la sociologie et des principaux concepts que cette discipline manipule
- place et rôle de la sociologie dans notre société
- histoire de la sociologie : du « triumvirat » des fondateurs de la sociologie (Marx, Durkheim, Weber) à aujourd’hui, en passant par la sociologie de terrain de « l’école de Chicago » et celle de Pierre Bourdieu
- les méthodes de la sociologie (notamment méthodologie quantitative et/ou qualitative)

2ème partie : Voir la société à travers les yeux du sociologie
- la socialisation et la culture
- la microsociologie
- les réseaux sociaux (au sens large, pas uniquement ceux que nous connaissons sur le web)

3ème partie : Division et union, Egalité et inégalité dans un monde divers
- la stratification sociale : revenu prestige, dynamiques : moyennisation ou polarisation, mobilité sociale
- l’ethnicité : préjugés et discrimination ; race, couleur de peau et ethnicité
- le genre : hommes et femmes, déconstruction de la notion de genre, droits des LGBT
- la religion : sa place dans l’histoire, croyances et pratiques

- 10 mythes déboulonnés par la sociologie

Globalement, j’ai apprécié la lecture de ce livre. C’est un bon ouvrage de vulgarisation, peut-être un daté par certains aspects (la présence de MySpace aux côtés de Facebook parmi les réseaux sociaux cités m’a fait rire). Cela me semble une bonne porte d’entrée dans une discipline dont on entend souvent parler dans les médias mais dont on connait assez peu les arcanes. Cela m’a en tout cas donné envie d’en savoir plus : après cette lecture je suis d’autant plus convaincu que la sociologie est un complément intéressant quand on s’intéresse à l’histoire et à la politique.

2 stars for effort and brevity.

Although I did not find any of the information useful, it is definitely most applicable for someone who wishes to know more about Sociology and what it means. The content is understandable and in bite-sized passages that does not seek to bore or infuriate the reader, unlike what most academic textbooks do. But again, it would be silly to use this as a textbook, considering that all information in this book are so summarised that it feels almost like a crash course, rather than something you would be using as a reference for higher education.

I was really the dumb person this book playfully referred to.

I graduated college in a bachelors degree in the medical sciences, and always wondered what social science was really about. Like... what did social science really revolve around? what was the literature about of Social Science? What was the intellectual approach of Social - Science?

Those few questions were the main questions that I always wondered about the academic industry of Social - Science. And. I decided to read this book. And, when I read this book... I really was grateful to have secured such a strong understanding and relation to what Social Science was.

Definitely recommend this book.

Provides the basics of Sociology, but perhaps less engaging than other Dummies editions. However, if you haven't studied any of the other social sciences before it does provide you with a decent summary in layman's terms.

If you're looking for the absolute basics of the basics in sociology, this is probably pretty useful. Not very much for me sadly, i found myself knowing most of the concepts discussed and getting bored quickly with the examples. Also he misrepresents some of Marx's ideas. I'm not marxist myself, but the criticisms of him weren't great in this book.

هیچ چیز جذاب و جدیدی نداشت و تکرار مکررات بود
معمولا کتاب های دامیز رو دوست دارم اما تا الان بدترینشون بود.
اطلاعات به شدت بیسیک بود و خوندش حوصله سر بر
مثل اینکه کتاب اجتماعی راهنمایی رو بخونی
فقط قسمت هایی که اندیشه های مارکس ،دورکهایم و وبر رو مقایسه میکرد خوب بود .

As a previously struggling sociology major, this book helped me immensely understand the study. Had it not have been for this extra reading on the side where it is later out so simply, Im not sure I would have managed some of the courses in my undergrad.
