Mysterious alien invaders have conquered two-thirds of the earth’s surface—its oceans—and now nations are reeling from the savage attacks that have struck every shore. Los Angeles and Washington D.C. are war zones.
The survival of the United States depends on heroes.
Among them are a grizzled Army veteran who pilots his ASHUR in defense of the nation’s capital, a brilliant analyst who works feverishly to unravel the secrets of the invaders, and the bold and daring officers of the US Navy, battered from below yet seeking to salvage victory from the jaws of defeat.
Yet some of the unlikeliest of heroes are the people who emerge from the shadows of everyday life to fight for their very survival as the alien incursion carves deeper into the continental coastlines.
Fighting in the currents is hard enough. Fighting the RIPTIDES is even harder…
I enjoyed the book, good amount of action and communicating then threat. The aliens and their variable units are freaky. I know you have to leave some believably here but I’m kind of confused my a few things. In the first book the bad ass sergeant couldn’t take on one boss. Now the rigs can take on multiple and kill then. The aliens have enough soldiers to fight all the worlds armies at the same time in 5 years … also seems unrealistic. I like the whole aliens in the water thing but where are their space ships?!? They have to have them to get to earth. Crabs are very fast in the water but not fast on the land. These creatures are equally mobile in land and water. Doesn’t make sense. The crabs are too quick on land. It just kind of interferes with the world. I do really like the different weapons and whatnot.
These novels read like web serials where the author felt compelled to add massive amounts of filler to make his word count and have enough chapters.
I was putting up with it up to the middle of book two (with a lot of page skipping), until a scene where the author said the Navy came and commandeered a USCG ship, putting the Coast Guard crew ashore and taking their ship to fight the aliens. The Coast Guard is one of the militaries of the United States and has fought alongside the Navy in every war in our history. It’s simple military ignorance on the part of the author.
There is a good story in the books, but the author has hidden it in too much filler and ignorance of the military and weapons to make me want to continue.
I mentioned that book one felt like it was missing the back half. Well here it is. A direct continuation of the stories and characters shown in book one, with some serious military sci fi action. Mecha vs bio suits. On its own it’s much better paced than book one, and characters show some serious development, even as the world is changing around them. This novel does little to expand the world building beyond what was done in the first novel, which holds it back. It ends far more comfortably than book 1 while leaving plenty of places to go in the sequel. I think if this had been presented with book one as a complete novel I would have given it a 5.
The instalment picks up straight after book one, it's frantic, frenetic and brutal. This enemy has to be one of the most inhumane and brutal ever written. Humanity is holding on by a tether, some are searching for family, others profits and others a story. A major gripe is stoll a bit of superfluous text and repititions that I skip. Blaze is utterly annoying also.
Totally cannot put it down. Great story, excellent characters, very relatable world that has been created. I live this series and can't wait for the next release!!!
its kind of ok. Falto was mostly just misery porn. Felt like I was listening to an audiobook of Come And See at times. A lot more of the author's pissy conservatism that got him shitcanned is present here. Way too much bootlicking of America's armed forces. Will not be returning for part three.
This was a book of war it was the battles that will become the war has see both sides are pushing new discoveries to kill each orther but only time will tell who writes the history of this war.
Story is filled with everything one could ask for in a military sci-fi novel. Great characters, lots of action, compelling "alien science" and great story arc.
A great addition to the series. Cannot wait to read book 3. It keeps you interested in what is going on with all the main and secondary characters in the story.
