Salou

Rate this book
Just a few pages into this international, multicultural, romantic thriller, Salou Kassai can't remember her own name- or anything else for that matter. After a tragic accident that took away her memory and much of her mobility, she wakes up in a Parisian hospital confused and scared. As she relearns how to use her mind and body, she finds herself torn between a past she hopes to recover and a future she's struggling to build.
Promising resident neurosurgeon Benjamin Gardé de Soos is having trouble keeping his mind off his newest patient. Placed on Salou's case, he finds himself drawn to her, returning to her bedside again and again no matter how hard he tries to stay away. He knows doctors should not form relationships with their patients, but his feelings for Salou are quickly gaining the upper hand.
As Salou and Benjamin grow closer, civil unrest looms in her homeland of Conakry, Guinea. There, a group of rebels secretly prepares to overthrow the government. When a leader of the insurgency meets Salou in a chance encounter, it becomes clear that he wants more than just political power.
Packed with suspense and romance, this genre-defying tale spans continents, cultures, and time periods to interlace a compelling set of characters as their world threatens to unravel in the midst of unforeseen circumstances.

I really wanted to love this book but I was really disappointed. There were a lot of holes in the plot. For example, a character would have graying hair on one page and brown hair a few pages later.

The editing was also not well done. The text has many typos, misplaced quotes, etc. that made it hard to follow at times.

I could set these things aside if there were a strong plot and otherwise good writing. But, the story was extremely rushed. They way it portrayed recovery from SA also was not great (going on a religious retreat & being totally changed), leaving a bad taste in my mouth. At the same time, the writing lacked depth and vibrancy. The dialogue among characters felty totally unrealistic and fell flat.

TW: abuse, sexual assault, racism for this book if you do read.

Salou is a captivating story of love and courage that stays with you long after you've turned the last page. Its endearing characters lead us through romance, tragedy, and personal fortitude, to places as diverse as Paris, San Francisco, and the heights of Koundara, a remote village perched in the Guinean Fouta Jalon. With Salou, we are reminded that life is certainly not a long quiet river, and that true love must be deserved.
I wholeheartedly recommend Salou.

I truly enjoyed reading SALOU. I liked the flow of the writing, the story's characters, the twists and turns, and the romance. It is a novel about resilience and courage that takes you through different cultures, from the bridges of Paris to the Heights of Koundara. Written with great sensitivity and in a non-convoluted way, this lyrical tale is gripping, especially because it is inspired by true events. I would highly recommend it!

Salou is a must-read for many reasons - it is simultaneously a suspenseful mystery, heart-melting romance and an educational journey through the globe and its many cultures. I learned so much about African and French cultures through this book, and the depth of detail is astonishing. Morenike has crafted a masterpiece that takes the reader on an emotional journey across the globe. Incredible in every way!
