It's not only an amazing sight to behold for the lucky residents of the area, but also a true miracle of nature. This was written kind of...oddly. It seemed both too complex in some places and too simplistic in others. It got the point across with some interesting graphics via maps, but it was kind of plain in the delivery of the facts. Three stars. A good starter book for a younger to middle reader who is interested in butterflies.

Basic Premise: A detailed explanation of the migration of the monarch butterflies.
This was a free Nook download, but I think if my son had asked for me to pay for it I would have. It kept his interest, which is always a task. He doesn't often pick nonfiction, so it was an exciting new choice. As a level 3 book, it had longer sentences (though still fairly simple) and more details. There were also some longer, more scientific terms, and each time they popped up there was a clear phonetic pronunciation guide included. My son even pronounced the words along with the "read-to-me" voice. The illustrations combined photos with realistic art to show the butterflies' journey. It also had maps, which was useful for showing the little guy where we live in relation to the journey. Overall, it was a fun, educational read. I rather enjoyed it.

This book I scooped up was my favorite Kindle download so far, and I loved everything about this delightful, fantastic book. I loved the way Ms. Edwards put the pronunciations in parenthesis beside the really complicated words. I loved the pictures she used. I loved her simple to understand explanations. This is a perfect book for homeschoolers and regular schoolers alike.

Title: Flight of the Butterflies
Summary: This text talks about the journey the monarch butterfly takes on it's yearly migration. It uses very vivid images to clarify the text.
Focus: Informational Features to Use in a Writing Mini Lesson
Images/Graphics Clarify a Text: This book would be forty kinds of boring if it weren't for the really great images. It shows young writers that even the blandest of text can be made special by adding graphics that match the writing. The images help the reader understand the text (that they may have slept through) and are quite vivid.
Authors Choice/Mixing Graphics and Images: The text using maps and images to clarify the text. This blend shows new writers that the author controls how to present information in their text and must select the best image for the text.

As a preschool teacher of four-year-olds, I plan units of study for my children and one that I want to do is on migration of animals. This book is a little long for them but when I use it in the science center to add to my lesson when we bring in the butterflies to hatch and release it will be a beautiful reference book for out unit of study. One positive in this book, it points out animals that migrate and ones that stay in the same place, which is a concept that will be one of my goals for the children to learn. Flight of the Butterflies will fit perfectly into my lesson plans for the unit on animal migration next spring.

Absolutely gorgeous photos/illustrations and also very informative! Even at 39 I learned something new! (I hadn't known that while the trip south is completed by a single butterfly that can live to the ripe old age of nine months, the trip back takes several generations with each only living about a month.)

Life of a butterfly
I loved this book. It was very informational, easy to read, and easy for my 8 year old to understand. It showed how short the butterflies life span really is and where they travel. Great book!
