Millions of Americans experience pain every day of their lives, their conditions unalleviated by the myriad medications and treatments available today. Maureen Pratt, who has had lupus for more than a decade, is intimately aware of the toll chronic pain takes on patients and their families.
In this practical and spiritual guide, she shares how she navigates through the frustrations, fears, and complexities of living with chronic pain and illness.
Using a combination of Bible passages, her own observations and insights, and prayer, Pratt provides help on issues that include dealing with isolation, coping with medical expenses, and learning to say no. Written with unstinting honesty and humor, Peace in the Storm will help readers identify their own spiritual and physical needs.
During the pandemic, I took a break from book writing to earn a Master of Theological Studies and now, after graduation, I am writing and publishing - and developing a new ministry! The Peace in the Storm Project is a unique, church-based model for accompaniment with and for people who live with chronic illness and pain. My devotional, Peace in the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain and Illness (Image/Penguin Random House) is the basis for the ministry, and my newest book, Beyond Pain: Job, Jesus, and Joy Revised Edition (Galilee Road Publishing) is also part of the ministry's resources. I am delighted by how the Holy Spirit is moving in and through my work! Stay tuned for more wonderful developments as the months and years move ahead!
A must-read for a person or family member with chronic illness. It leads each chapter with a Bible verse or a meaningful quotation, if I remember correctly. This makes a great gift -- not just those with lupus but other conditions affecting daily life in the physical & spiritual realms. The books deals with issues facing the chronically ill from how to travel, meet new friends, deal with difficult family members to ways of learning to cope and accept the diagnosis with Scripture to aid in the process. Each chapter also comes with a prayer the author has written. Impressed with the wide-range of topics discussed and the approach to those topics as related to Scripture.
Not a book I could ever read enough. Devoured the whole thing like a desert lacking up moisture. A much needed tool. I will have to re-read it. And re-read it again. Hoping I can commit these powerful pages to memory.
Thoughts for those whose minds are clouded with illness and pain. Maureen Pratt is the fellow sufferer who walks beside you and tell you that God has neither forsaken you nor abandoned you.
