Very misleading title, having leonardo in such big print and a picture of the mona Lisa on the cover far larger than any related leonardo pictures inside.
I was inspired to find out more about leonardo da Vinci after listening to an abridged version of the Da Vinci code last year. This has very little about the man and his ideas and life in it. I can't believe it even has this title. It is more about the renaissance period in general. I see there is now an updated version by. I would rate that higher if was more clear that it was about the Renaissance period and less about da Vinci simply because it is fairly good as a basic guide to the renaissance period and has a few illustrations but NOT as a book about leonardo. This was disappointing. I would have liked to see a larger more detailed drawing of his sketch for what inspired the helicopter for example. It's there but you can't really see it, just information by the side informing you that he designed a flying machine. There is information about the clothes they wore, Isaac newton and galileo and how long they lived which was interesting. I did not get what I wanted out of this book though.
It looks like an updated version is not simply a change of title but a much better book from reading the reviews. They say there are fascinating website links and detailed drawings, which is what I was interested in so I would recommend that over this. If the book I read is available in Wiltshire libraries, I doubt the newer better book is though.
Such a fascinating book about the Renaissance. My past life maybe from the Renaissance since I can identify with this period. :) I learned a lot about the world when Da Vinci lived. Lots of colorful pictures in the book too. Very entertaining coffee table book.
Personal Reaction: This book was very fascinating to me because I tried reading the real Da Vinci Code when I was younger and it was too difficult. It might not be the best book for kids because if they are not interested in the person, then they might not enjoy the book but for students who would be it would be a great book.
Reading in a group: I definitely think if students were interested in Da Vinci then this would be a great book to read out loud. It has many different aspects of it that would be great for a group setting like pictures and questions and information that students could need help deciphering.
Reading individually: This book could be difficult for someone who is not interested in Da Vinci but would not be impossible for a 3rd-5th grader to read and understand the concept. This could be a good book for students during a unit of History and Europe.
Literary Analysis: This book has great literary devices that would help students with their vocabulary. The setting of the book and who Da Vinci is already starts off as a more difficult topic, along side his artwork. The vocabulary used would be a great challenge for students.
What's not to love when the master of the Renaisance is involved? Detailed photos of all his art work with symbolism and style explained in detail. Also gave the history of when & where he worked. A quick ejoyable read.
Excellent resources in the back of the book: Useful Websites, visit a virtual Leonardo Museum, etc. The MOST fascinating is the Vatican Museum website. I can't wait to go to Italy again, there is SO much I missed. This is more of a reference book on the Renaissance and Da Vinci.
Leonardo was extremely diverse in his interests, skills, and vocations. I would be interested in learning more about how he juggled his various interests while becoming proficient at them all. A true Renaissance man!
