Arthur and D.W. take Baby Kate and Pal to the neighborhood street fair. But suddenly Baby Kate starts crying. Arthur sends D.W. to buy Kate an ice cream cone, and she carefully ties Pal's leash to a bench outside the store. But when she comes out, Pal has squirmed out of his collar! Includes two pages of word stickers.
Marc Tolon Brown is perhaps best known for his series of children's books about Arthur the aardvark, which was turned into an animated television show on PBS. Brown is a three-time Emmy Award winner, for his role on the television show inspired by his books.
He lives on Martha's Vineyard and in New York City with his wife, Laurie Krasny Brown. He has three children, sons Tolon and Tucker, and daughter Eliza. The names of his two sons have been hidden in all of the Arthur books except for one: Arthur's Tooth.
Arthur and his sister, D.W., take their younger sister Kate to the fair, and Kate cries the whole time. The two don't know what to do, so Arthur tells D.W. to go buy Kate an ice cream to get her to stop. While in the ice cream shop, D.W. ties up the family puppy, Pal, outside, but he runs away. Eventually, Arthur and D.W. find Pal with a bunch of balloons in his mouth, and the balloons make him float up. After a while, though, all the balloons pop except one and Pal floats down to the ground with it. He brings it to Kate, and she stops crying. It turns out, all kate wanted was one balloon. The pictures in the book were very well done, which is good for little kids who are just learning to read on their own. I rated this book 4 stars because, for a children's book, the storyline was actually very good. It kept me engaged and reading even though it is a book for children. It is good that the author did such a good job with the story because when kids are learning to read, they usually lose interest easily. This book provides an interesting story while teaching kids to read.
The kids seemed to enjoy this book. I always loved the Arthur books and TV show when I was a kid. It was great visiting one of those stories with my preschool class.
This book is about Arthur losing his puppy and Baby Kate notices that D.W. and Arthur's puppy has disappeared, but cannot tell them, as she is a baby. She begins crying and Arthur and D.W. don't know why she is crying. She becomes even more distraught due to Arthur and D.W. not being able to know what she's saying. Eventually, D.W. notices that their puppy was missing and has to go on a search for the lost puppy. The end up finding the puppy Pal at the school after their journey looking for him.
This book is fictional.
The young adult literature companion book is Theo Boone Kid Lawyer by John Grisham.
I chose this specific book, as it does deal with a mystery being solved, but more importantly I related Baby Kate to Bobby in the young adult literature book, as she struggles to find a way to tell Arthur and D.W. that the puppy Pal is gone as she can't speak and Bobby struggles in telling the truth about the murder, as he is an illegal immigrant and is nervous to go to jail.
This was a book I read as an adult to my son, Gage, when he was younger. There's nothing too special that stands out about the Arthur books for adults, but they are enjoyable enough for children. Not too funny or interesting.
