I read and used the advice from one of the first editions of this book back in the 1970's. I highly recommend this book. It is a good guide for those considering buying a puppy, as well as those who are serious about training their dog.

This book is extremely helpful in the explaining the fundamentals of dog training. The author does a great job of describing the philosophy behind her methods. The second half of the book is directed toward training dogs for competitions, which is not something that is relevant to most dog owners. I could see this being a very good book for those dog owners that are interested in showing their dogs.

Good tips, but the book as a whole was over-simplified in my opinion. It tells you "A" method for teaching the excercises, but goes into no deail on trouble shooting and issues that come up at shows and not at homes.

Another good book for owners of typical obedience breeds (Shepherds, Retrievers, Spaniels). The author is very knowledgeable and has a very practical outlook.
