I was expecting this book to be something very different than it is. To call it a handbook is a misnomer. It is a "how to create your own food styling business" guide, and not much more. There are tips on food styling that focus on the mechanics. But the mechanics used are largely artificial, while my photography focuses on shooting the food as it truly is -- no gimmicks. There were no tips on prop styling (instead, relegating that to someone else) and none on photography. I don't believe these ...more

If I had known what this book was about, I never would have bought it. The first 130 pages were about the business of arranging food to be still-photographed or filmed or televised. The processes involved render the food unfit for consumption. Some of it was never fit for consumption in the first place, e.g. substituting artificial ice cream for the hard-to-handle real thing. This book is for someone aspiring to be a professional food stylist or someone wanting to start a business as a food stylist. It goes through a lot of details, such as a list of tools and equipment to have on hand for a photo shoot, how to select the right ingredients, items to discuss with your clients, how to create a business plan, and how to run a food stylist business. Wow, interesting.

Who woulda known Food Stylists have such exacting methods for making food look so delicious. It's a different mindset than making food taste good or even edible using tools (special effect supplies), techniques (scaffolding for keeping food stacked) and strange things (denture cream on hamburgers?!).

Great reading for any aspiring food stylist.
