Most recently, endeavors at the Gombe field site have included landmark research related to AIDS progression; establishing programs to improve sanitation, health care, and education in neighboring Tanzanian communities; and partnering with local people to pursue reforestation initia ...more

A commemorative piece on the work that world-famous primatologist/anthropologist Jane Goodall has performed over the (as of 2010) five decades of her remarkable career. It’s a very easy read and lavishly decorated with high definition images throughout her years at Gombe Stream National Park off of Tanzania’s Lake Tanganyika. Using many passages that feature snippets of Dr. Goodall’s previous publications, this book serves as a good primer for her life of dedication to chimpanzees and wilderness ...more

A great collection of photos and narratives describing Jane Goodall's experience with chimpanzees. It was most interesting to learn that her initial research was almost halted as the British government did not want to send a single women into the wild... she ended up taking her mother with her! Jane discovered chimpanzees would use tools, the social dynamics of the groups and gained their trust before she began her worldwide speaking engagements to encourage others to work towards conservation. ...more

I'd like to give this book 3.5 stars. Here's what I liked: great intro into the story of JG's work, quick read, subject matter very approachable. Awesome photos! Here's what I missed out on: the second half of the book goes into her conservation efforts, and though very important, I was more interested in hearing about her time in the field. About two uses of the phrase "pristine forest" into the second half and I started tuning out. That phrase is overused in conservation writing and has lost i ...more

A great introduction to Goodall and the Chimpanzees. This book offered an overall snapshot of events and initiatives regarding conservation efforts, chimp life, and the plight (and hope) of the chimpanzee. This would be the perfect book, rich with photographs, to take young adults from just being interested in chimps to being passionate about them. 4 stars only because it could have been longer based in the vast information available.

Such a great book on a remarkable woman! Loved hearing about Jane's passion and how she's using her popularity to make a real change in the lives of all creatures living in Gombe. There was so much I didn't know and understand before I read this book, but now that my eyes have been opened there's no way I can shut them again. Thank you Jane for inspiring me to do more good in the world.

In my opinion, the BEST non-fiction allows one to live vicariously through the good works of others. And who better to emulate than Jane Goodall? This book contains FABULOUS pictures, personal stories (both human and chimpanzee), history, and facts. The conservation parts, although quite important, do not seem preachy or unobtainable. Who wants to go to the zoo? . ? . ?

Informative book with plenty of color pictures. I bought this for my 17 yr old nephew who is interested in zoology and he loved it. This book would be a great intro into dr jane's work and conservation. And perfect for a young adult who may get bogged down by one of her paperbacks. ...more

A gorgeous and moving book with beautiful photography and flawless writing that draws the reader deep into the world of Jane Goodall and her life with the chimps and beyond. Definitely highly recommended.
A large format book with (many great pictures) about Jane Goodall’s work with the chimpanzees of Gombe over the last 50 years. The book also talks about all that Dr. Goodall has done to make the world in general a better place. Jane Goodall is an inspiration!

Overall this book was very informal. There is not much to say besides the fact that I learned a lot about Jane Goodall and a lot about chimpanzees. Good read!!
