I like poetry anthologies in general, but what I like most about Parlour Poetry is that every single poem was intended to be read aloud, and, for me, poems are a verbal art form. As far as I am concerned there is no worse fate for a poem to be voiceless, that is, it is written in such a way that it must be read silently, that attempting to share it with others (or just bringing it to your own ears) means running the risk of your tongue falling off. I don't insist all poems must have rhyme of rhythm or even punctuation, but for a poem to live it must have a voice.

First read these in 1978 after receiving the book from my beloved grandparents. My nan adored poetry and would love vast swathes of verse and encourage me to do the same.
