If God Be with Us: The Maxims of St Philip Neri
St Philip Neri (1515-1595) is known as the Apostle of Rome and the founder of the Congregation of the Oratory. This translation of his maxims and sayings is the work of Fr Faber, first published in 1847. His Maxims emphasise the constant teaching of the masters of the spiritual life, going back to the Desert Fathers (themselves always the favourite reading of St Philip). Full of good sense, they present us with an essential spirituality, presented as easily accessible reflections for each month of the year.

One short saying per day. Every day of the year. There are progressing themes through the book, with a lot of immediately applicable stuff for your life. Very direct and to the point.
Apparently Saint Philip was a fan of the Desert Fathers, and this is rather reminiscent of them at times. Same thing of super concentrated wisdom in these aphorisms.
There are a few real gems in here and it gives a good thought to frame each day within.

Would definitely re-read this because the maxims are bite-sized yet packed with so much meaning. Deducted points because 2 of them were arguably a bit sexist...but Neri was from the 16th century so I'll close one eye.

This is a series of maxims from St. Philip Neri. Short, pithy, and edifying remarks on how to be holy and thrive in the spiritual life.
