A part of me wishes that this was a series with 10+ volumes in which the god, the immortal and the girl travel across the country to say goodbye to a variety of gods and learn about different views on death and dying, but I'm glad for the three perfect and stunningly beautiful volumes we got.

As the journey winds down, the question of just what will happen if our characters enter Yomi looms before them. But, Hibino’s been looking for a soulmate who’s been in front of him the whole time. What are the odds? Yeah, about that… And, while everybody might be going into Yomi, but that doesn’t mean they’ll stay there…

I do enjoy a manga that has something to say about something and both of Kamatami’s manga I’ve read have done just that. Our Dreams at Dusk is my preferred of their works, but this one is really enjoyable.

What the story boils down to is the nature of immortality and, wisely, not just the perils involved. It would be easy to just make this Hibino’s cautionary tale, but there are other ways to live a long time and that’s where the story gets clever.

My supposition as to what would happen with Mika was not correct, but it wasn’t exactly wrong either. Again, this little nuance in what could have been a lot more blatant is what makes this story work in the end. Combined with the struggles of Hibino, it makes for two different perspectives that might not be so different in the end.

But, really, this is mostly Hibino’s volume. His struggle has some charm, a lot of heartache, a great twist, and, just maybe, the answer that Mika’s looking for. Even if he himself doesn’t quite realize it. Then again, immortality might make you smart, but it doesn’t necessarily make you wise. Or nearly as confident as you seem. His last scenes in the story are done just perfectly.

I did like his backstory and how it intertwined with the nameless god that we’ve travelled with so far, although it feels like the latter really got the short shrift this volume and weren’t incredibly prominent before either. They do get more to do in Hibino’s recollections, but there’s not necessarily something of their own.

Okay, yes, I did tear up at one point, that all being said. But I didn’t actually cry, so no automatic five stars. If anything, I think this goes really hard into Japanese religious beliefs to the point where it does go a little over my head. There are copious notes, but with this being a blend of ideas it would help if you had a bit of a background in this stuff.

Three volumes also doesn’t give quite enough time to flesh things out as much as I’d like. I wish Mika’s story had been a little less nebulous, although the denouement is very satisfactory. There’s nearly a full meal here, but not quite. I feel like another couple of volumes would have been the perfect length.

But, being left wanting more is always the preference. There’s no question that this was worth the time - does a memory count as living forever? And whose memories? I really enjoyed how this tried to look at identity in terms of perception and the people who have known you.

And if things come to a predictable end, does that make them bad? Not really, if the ending is done well enough and what happens here makes sense for every single character. That’s worth a lot more than you realize some times.

4 stars - strong, but not a complete knockout. If the premise of this story sounds at all appealing, it definitely came in for a landing with a pretty solid, albeit not flawless, dismount.

No sé que escribir a parte de que amé esta historia. Con este tomo estuve en un constante, quiero llorar, siento bonito, estoy modo emotiva, así todo el tiempo.
El mayor tema en este tomo son los recuerdos, por como nos conectan con las personas que queremos, su peso y el efecto que pueden tener en nosotros. Me gustó mucho por cómo se utilizó de varias maneras y cómo se conecta con la vida y la muerte.
Esta historia en forma completa trata de un tema que lo vemos de manera bastante negativa, la muerte, y de verdad que aquí lo tratan de una manera que me gusta mucho, de perspectivas, creencias, el efecto que genera en los vivos y como influye en sí la vida. Todo esto logra que uno reflexione y siento que así debería ser en relación con este tema.
Amo haber leído este viaje con esta temática, personajes y el final que tuvo.

Es un buen final para la historia, se profundiza más en el pasado de Hibino y Pol lo que vuelve a su desenlace más significativo y Mika tiene un arco de crecimiento predecible pero coherente aunque se pudo profundizar más en ella. De todas formas es un buen manga que no necesita dar muchas vueltas para contar su historia.

Después de que Pol consiga recuperarse y no convertirse en un ser corrupto, nuestros tres protagonistas prosiguen su travesía, siendo ya el camino cada vez más corto ante la inmediatez de su destino. Y precisamente por eso, por el inminente final, las cosas se complican. Pol e Hibino tienen un conflicto con el tema de los recuerdos: el primero sufre al ser incapaz de recordar su pasado y ante el convencimiento de que hay algo sumamente importante que debe recordar a toda costa antes de morir, y el segundo quiere enterrar los recuerdos que lleva acarreando en más de dos mil años de inmortalidad. Pero los recuerdos, a pesar de ser un arma de doble filo, es algo que permite a los vivos seguir adelante.

Siguiendo con esa narrativa mezclando la filosofía de la vida y la muerte, las metáforas visuales con el toque de realismo mágico, Yuhki Kamatani cierra de una forma perfecta esta obra que reflexiona y habla sobre un tema que se sigue considerando bastante tabú: la muerte.

5 étoiles parce que c'est une lecture vraiment bien qui traite d'amour, d'amitié, de la mort, du deuil et de la vie. Le style est magnifique. J'avoue que j'aurai préféré 2 ou 3 volumes de plus pour vraiment apprécier plus de petits moments entre le trio, et, surtout, pour avoir une fin avec plus de réponses. J'aurai aimé voir ne serait-ce qu'une page où Mika a la fin qu'elle voulait, une où le trio (et le duo dedans hihi) se retrouve vraiment. Je reste un peu sur ma faim mais ça reste une lecture vraiment agréable donc un petit 5 étoiles.

Con este último tomo Yuhki Kamatani cierra de manera perfecta la travesia de Mika, Hibino y Pol.
Tres personajes muy distintos entre si, con un objetivo en mente diferente y a la vez muy similar. Todos anhelan y a la vez temen una de las facetas de la muerte, siendo la más significativa el olvido.
En este último tomo se trata, aunque con sutiliza, en profundidad este tópico. ¿Qué son los recuerdos? ¿Qué peso tienen en el dia a dia? Su peso a veces puede llegar a ser sobrecogedor, pero sin embargo, en ocasiones son el único motivo por el que podemos seguir viviendo cuerdos.

Amé demasiado este manga, este fue un tomo perfecto, lleno de giros inesperados, respuestas a preguntas existenciales y un desenlace lleno de tristeza y nostalgia, pero que enseña que así es la vida y por mucho que duela, merece la pena.
Los personajes son únicos, complejos, con historias realmente humanas y conmovedoras sin importar su contexto fantasioso y mitológico.

La poésie mélancolique qui empreint cette série m’a étreinte jusqu’à sa dernière page et c’est avec une émotion sincère que je referme cette lecture.

Pourtant, on ne peut pas dire que Yuhki Kawatani brille par sa narration ici. C’est plutôt assez linéaire et parfois assez brumeux, voire cela va trop vite dans cet ultime opus et pourtant j’en viens à tout lui pardonner, parce que j’aime le ton décalé et mélancolique, parce que j’aime les dessins poétiques, parce que l’émotion des personnages m’étreint moi-même sur ces questions intimes et universelles.

L’autrice nous a embarqué au cours d’un poignant road-trip morbide où ses trois héros ne souhaitaient qu’une chose : mourir, l’un parce qu’on était en train de l’oublier et les autres parce qu’ils avaient trop de souvenir leur faisant du mal. C’est ce rapport à la vie, à la mort, à l’individualité et à l’amitié qu’interroge l’autrice avec brio. Elle fait preuve de douceur, de sensibilité et d’un regard neuf ou plutôt totalement vierge sur la question, s’ouvrant ainsi à tous les champs du possible.

Impossible de ne pas craquer devant ce héros millénaire qu’est Yamato quand on découvre son passé avec le dieu, Hani, qu’il sert depuis si longtemps. Plus facile c’est de résister quand l’autrice plaque sur son personnage un modèle digne des Paroles de poilus. Ça ne m’a pas fait vibrer comme le reste et j’ai trouvé cela un peu artificiel à cause de la façon brutale dont s’est incorporé au récit. C’est tout le contraire de la douce fragilité des liens Yamato – Hani qui seront notre fil conducteur final et toucheront par l’éphémérité durable dont elle témoigne.

Cette vision de la mort, teinté de divinité et croyance ne pouvait que me plaire par son rappel à la culture bouddhiste japonaise quand il s’agit de se moment charnière de la vie. Yuhki Kawatani le met en scène avec tellement de poésie avec ses dessins lumineux et virevoltant faisant la part belle au folklore japonais. C’est lumineux et plein d’émotion.

Alors oui, ça parle de peur de la mort, de l’après mais surtout peur de l’oubli et tragédie de la mémoire. Et chacun des deux aspects saisi, que ce soit la peur d’être oublié ou la douleur de se rappeler de quelque chose qui a changé et présente un manque. Pas besoin de longs discours chez l’autrice, elle sait trouver l’art et la manière de conter cela en peu de cases pour nous émouvoir.

Ce n’est donc pas sans émotion que j’ai mis un terme à ce voyage au dénouement plein de surprise et d’émotion. C’est beau de voyager avec ses personnages. C’était tendrement amusant de les rencontrer et de faire un bout de chemin avec eux. Ce fut donc bref mais chargé en émotion et décidément je signe pour chaque série de cette autrice tant son univers et son ton me séduit. Merci à Akata de la suivre d’aussi près !

I will only add vol.3 for this remarkable trilogy. Hiraeth follows the three main characters journey towards death. Literally, in their case. What follows throughout this journey is a fascinating exploration of death from different perspectives - grief, immortality, memory, detachment, fear, timing, acceptance - as well as the ever-present question of the meaning of one's own journey in life itself. Hiraeth does not invent the wheel. However, even as its messages are not some we did not already feel or see before, it does present its own reality, characters, and pieces of wisdom in a beatifully packaged and emotionally engaging way. The art is beautiful to look at and knows exactly when to be impactful, often presenting incredibly rich panels that make you stop to look and think about the moment in a masterful management of reading time. Even more importantly, the three main characters and the people they meet each are wonderful vessels for their stories and perspectives and, except in some cases of personal preference, also incredibly likeable. In my opinion, especially the third volume truly hit home; so while vol.2 would probably get a lower rating from me and I did need most of vol.1 to truly have Mika grow on me, vol.3 is a beautiful conclusion to the story and ties it together in a way that leaves you feeling accomplished, emotional, and a little wiser at the end of your own journey with Hiraeth.

Ce manga était superbe et a eu la fin qu’il méritait. Je sors de ce dernier tome avec quelques larmes dans les yeux.

Les dessins de Yuhki Kamatani sont fabuleux de A à Z et ces trois couvertures tout en couleur et en détails font sûrement partie des plus belles de ma collection.

J’en attendais un peu plus que les volumes précédents pour ce tome final et je l’ai eu! L’auteurice a réussi à couvrir à la fois le lore de Hani et Yamato en plus de la très émouvante conclusion à cette série. Je ne m’attendais pas à ce que les deux compagnons soient âmes sœurs, et c’est une très douce histoire d’amour à travers les siècles qui nous a été là dépeinte. J’adore ces deux personnages tous les deux pourtant très différents.

J’ai trouvé notre protagoniste Mika moins attachante et intéressante que ses deux partenaires de route, mais après tout, ce n’est qu’une enfant. Elle a su être touchante et accepter son deuil dans ce dernier tome.

Ce furent trois volumes de douceur, de peine et de plaisir avec le trait inoubliable de Kamatani, qui sait toujours aussi bien couvrir des sujets sensibles et important comme le deuil, la maladie, la queerness et tout simplement l’amour et les liens entre les gens.
Trois tomes que je recommande à tous. En somme, un très beau roadtrip vers la mort.

Heartbreaking from beginning to end, which isn't a surprise since the whole story involves death, in its many facets. With only three volumes, the series has to fit as much as it can in that allotment of time. I think it hits all the important deliberations involved with death. From wanting to die after living forever, to wanting to die to be with a loved one, to dying but having no control, to dying but fighting to remain forever. It covers the swathe.

All three main characters are facing death, each has their own journey and each has terms they must meet within themselves. And its this investigation into each of these stories that creates the overall emotions, unless that isn't your thing. Which is fine. I think you can still find something to get invested in outside of the emotions. Lots of talk about faith and gods, but what I liked most is that the basis of the faith is having it in your loved ones, in the people (if any) who not only elevate your life but make it worth living, those simple moments, the memories that if lost make death all the more final. It leaves the reader with a lot to think about. I know I will be pondering it for some time to come. And maybe even beyond that.

Final de esta pequeña historia donde un dios, un ser inmortal y una humana viajan hacia el Yomi, con el fin de finalizar su vida.

Este tomo deja claro cuales son las historias de cada personaje, y sus diferentes relaciones. Aparte también nos deja ver que, a pesar del motivo de su viaje, han llegado a disfrutar y a quererse, como si hubiesen formado una breve pero feliz familia.

Y, aunque todo pueda sonar muy oscuro y tétrico, la autora presenta un enfoque mucho más suave del mismo. Aunque esto hace que no impacte de la misma manera que si se hubiese dado un enfoque más dramático.

Y hablando del final, un final bastante acorde, donde se ha podido ver tanto la evolución de personajes como las enseñanzas que esta obra quería mostrar.

Así que, en conclusión y en general, una obra cortita y bastante buena donde el concepto de la muerte no es una tragedia en sí, sino un elemento natural de toda existencia, que ha de llegar tarde o temprano.

Hiraeth es una historia de tres tomos y que me alegro que haya sido así porque abarca lo justo y necesario. Nos cuenta lo que nos quería contar... al grano. Sin irse por las ramas, sin intentar extender una historia que ya estaba bien con tres tomos. Aplaudo eso de Yuhki Kamatani y claramente quiero leer mas cosas de su autoría porque quedé maravillada.

En este último tomo podemos conocer a fondo a los personajes. Finalmente conocemos toda su historia, y eso me gustó mucho. Lo venía esperando desde el primer tomo, no voy a mentirles. Soy así de ansiosa.

El arte es igual de maravilloso que en los mangas anteriores y como también me sucedía, podía quedarme horas mirando un mismo panel. Arte puro.

Cuando comenzamos a acercarnos al final podía ir sintiendo como no quería despedirme de estos personajes tan extraños y a la vez tan cercanos a uno. Fue una experiencia preciosa, que comienza tocando temas muy delicados y luego nos da un mensaje muy esperanzador.

Czasami rodzina to umierające bóstwo, sarkastyczny nieśmiertelny i nastolatka z depresją i to właśnie jest piękne. Hiraeth mnie kupiło od pierwszego tomu; umierający bóg i nieśmiertelny ratują nastolatkę przed samobójstwem, a ta później stwierdza że odbędzie razem z nimi pielgrzymkę do zaświatów. Po drodze przez Japonię spotykają bóstwa i ludzi i poznają ich historie i siebie samych. I ohhh to taka piękna historia o żałobie, życiu i kochaniu życia. Przeczytam także wszystko co ma motyw nieśmiertelności i eksploruje jej cenę i konsekwencje, i o mój boże, Hibino skradł mi pod tym względem serce.

Ta historia jest też dla mnie bardzo queercoded - ba, Hibino spotyka się w pierwszym tomie z jednym ze swoich przeszłych partnerów, ale natura jego relacji z Hanim zostaje w sferze interpretacji. Mika po samobójstwie Mitsuhy traci wszelką chęć do życia i wielokrotnie nazywa ją całym swoim światem.

Jedyne co boli, to jak krótka ta seria jest. Na spokojnie podróż Miki, Haniego i Hibino dałoby się przedłużyć nawet na 10 tomów, ale często to, co najlepsze szybko się kończy. Cała historia była piękna.

I’m a fan of Kamatani’s work, so… my only complaint about this story is that I wish there was more to it.

The premise is that Mika’s a young teen whose best friend, that she loved more than anything, died, so now Mika wants to die and meet her in the afterlife. As fate would have it, she ends up joining up on a journey with an unnamed dying god and over-a-thousand-year-old immortal man Hibino. Together, they road trip through Japan in a pilgrimage to Yoni, the mythical resting place of the dead.

It’s a lovely story about grief, death, and the burdens of carrying the memories of your loved ones after they pass.

Also, as is the case with any Kamatani Yuhki manga, no straight people in sight, amen.

Como review de todo la saga, debo admitir que el 1er volumen no me convencía mucho, pero seguí con el 2o porque ya lo había comprado (gracias de nuevo a la persona de fb market por ese 2x1) y me gusto un poco más, no demasiado pero si lo suficiente para comprarme ese ultimo y 3er volumen y oh boy, este es el bueno. Si tuve ganas de llorar varias veces, y el dibujo me gusto mucho más.
Hibino, el que creí que era mi personaje menos fav termino gustandome más que los demás.
Debo admitir que no se si soy yo o en partes no se entendía la continuidad de los movimientos, no me quedaba claro como se habian movido de un lugar a otro tan pronto (?). Extraño.
Finalmente, se agradece de corazón que al final los gays si pudieran tener un final feliz <3

Aunque la obra ofrece la reflexión correcta sobre lo que representa la pérdida de un ser querido y como afrontarla.

Ya que finalmente nuestra protagonista comprende que la responsabilidad de los vivos es mantener vivo el recuerdo de los que ya no están.

El viaje, aunque corto, ha permitido a nuestra protagonista llegar a la conclusión correcta y amar la vida -aunque sea por rememorar la de su amiga- y al fin dejar de soltar con tanta alegría que se quiere morir con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja.

Palabras que jamás deberían soltarse a la ligera. Por muy poco valor que consideres que tiene tu vida, siempre le importaras a alguien, aunque no lo aprecies.

Estos libros tratan sobre una chica que ha perdido a su mejor amiga. Ella siente un vacío inmenso y decide morir para reunirse con ella, pero cuando va a s0icidarse la salva un chico que es inmortal que quiere morir y comienza a ir él y un dios hacia la muerte.

Me ha gustado por sus enseñanzas. La chica evoluciona en su pensamiento sobre la muerte. Durante su camino conoce a personas que han estado a punto de morir y valoran la vida, entabla relación con sus compañeros de viaje que son inmortales y para ellos es un suplicio, habla con otros que tienen mucho miedo a morir, etc.

En general, muestra una visión de la vida vs. la muerte.

Que les digo? Amo todo lo que escribe y dibuja Yuhki Kamatani, y este claramente no fue la excepción! Hiraeth es de verdad un viaje para entender la muerte, el miedo a ella, la búsqueda de la misma, no se, de verdad que es una historia muy bonita, dónde entiendes las decisiones y anhelos de todos los personajes, dónde a pesar de que la muerte es el tema principal, no hay tristeza alguna al afrontarnos a ella, porque la forma en que te cuentan todo hace que veas la belleza de la muerte, que sí, es triste, pero es triste solo para los que quedan atrás, cosa que el mismo manga te deja claro.

A short, but fun and sometimes bittersweet series. It brings up death and the different ways that people can see it. They finally reach their destination, and everyone gets their wish...though wishes sometimes change a bit.

It was a little unclear why the old man knew that the immortal was remembering them and...maybe not letting them "die" completely because of that? That part was a little vague.

Overall I was satisfied with the ending. It wasn't a tearjerker IMO, and nicely wrapped up the various characters.
