About the author

Emily Bolam is a British children's author and illustrator. She was born in Buckinghamshire in 1969.. She studied at Amersham College and Brighton College of Art under the tutelage of well known illustrators John Vernon Lord and Chris McEwan. Her first idea for a children's book began as a college project and was published upon her graduation.

Since then, Emily has illustrated over a hundred books for children, by many different authors, including Georgie Adams, Vivian French and Francesca Simon. She has worked with publishers such as Penguin, Macmillan, Orchard Books and Orion amongst many others.

She continues to live and work in Brighton where she shares her studio with other artists and illustrators.

I liked the colorful pictures and the stimulating textures caused by the raising of the page surface. I was less impressed by the lack of words on each page -- only 1 word, the animal's sound, was on each page. However, we made up for that by using the textures as a starting point for discussion, whether related to the sound the animal makes or something else related to the animal.

This is a very simple board book. About five animals are introduced, each with a sound. The pictures are colorful and have textures. The page on the left enlarges the texture and a color pattern, then that texture and pattern can be found on the animal. Best for babies just learning about animals who are still really into handling a book. (Whereas Natalie at 19 months wasn't that excited about these animals, and isn't too interested in touching the pictures most of the time).

This brightly colored book for your beginner reader is wonderfully crafted. Each page has a texture for a child to touch and explore. Your new reader can learn words, speak sounds and become familiar with the featured animals. This is a great beginner book for a child just starting to enjoy books of his/her very own.

This book would be okay for toddlers. There are some interesting textures, patterns, and bright colors, all of which I think they would enjoy. The only words are the noises the animals make, which is disappointing to me, as I consider such an approach as being sort of lazy. This book could be used to talk with the child about different animals' appearances and the noises they make.

This book was boring, even for my toddler. The textures are not very pronounced, and the single word on each page doesn't provide enough substance.
