The most important concept I took away from this book is that at two years old you control all the decisions for your child. From bed time and what they eat to who their friends are and what they watch on tv. When your child is sixteen they control all these decisions. How do you manage this transition?
Mac suggests we manage it the way we teach kids to ride a bicycle. Expecting frequent failures and providing encouragement for each new attempt to handle responsibility.
He also reminds us that we are modeling how we want them to live, even when we say otherwise.

Admittedly, some of the details in this book are quirky. But his main point is a good one, and he gives practical advice for how to achieve the goal of raising kids who are self-disciplined and independent yet still share your values. It's also well-written.
