I enjoyed reading this book and looking at the illustrations too. They were very colorful and detailed. I thought it was funny what James would read in the newspaper because none of those would ever actually happen. He seemed gullible in believing all the stories that he read. I was surprised that Mrs. Dunphy wasn't angry with James for ripping up her paper all the time. It looked like he created a huge mess. I wonder what Mrs. Dunphy thought when she kept finding her books off the shelf and James looking at them. This book is appropriate for a kindergarten classroom because they are beginning to learn to read as well as the dog. I would consider it to be modern fantasy because it is in a realistic setting and it has a animal that thinks it can read.

This book was cute but it is nothing I would use in the classroom. I might read it to pass the time but there is no lesson with this book or anything like that. The illustrations were good though.
