Born in Mountain Grove, a small rural town in the Missouri Ozarks, Dennis is the fourth of six children. He logged a ton of pew time at the local Baptist Church where he honed his artistic abilities by drawing on church bulletins during Sunday morning sermons.
After graduating from high school, he attended Southwest Missouri State University and studied art. During the college years, he spent his summers working in amusement parks (Opryland & Silver Dollar City) drawing caricatures. Dennis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and stumbled blindly into a career as a freelance illustrator.
After spending the 90s in Texas, Dennis and family moved to Northeastern Indiana where his wife Karen is a professor at Huntington University. His two grown sons now live and work in the Oklahoma City area.
For fun Dennis plays in a recreational ice hockey league where he pretends to be Wayne Gretzky, but plays more like Wayne Gretkowski, the ninety year old store greeter at the local Wal-Mart. He also occasionally plays bass and guitar in the band at his church where he continues to insist that a pyrotechnics show and hydraulic stage for the band would really add a lot to the Sunday morning worship services.

“Noah always obeyed God.
But Noah’s neighbors sinned.
One day God told Noah,
‘Since your neighbors always sin,
I am going to send a flood.’” (4)
A careful reading of Genesis 6-9 does NOT support this characterization of Noah. Consider:
“The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually….But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:5, 8)
Noah was NOT morally superior to the rest of humanity. What separated him was that he found God’s favor (i.e., God’s grace was given to him). The Hebrew word here for “favor” = “grace.” God’s grace made all the difference, leading to a transformed Noah who obeyed God’s instructions to build an ark.
The way this books describes Noah is so typical, but it’s not correct.

MY REVIEW:
I appreciate Zonderkids imitative to publish I Can Read! books that not only aid a child in reading skills but also in their Bible knowledge. However, this book about Noah, while relatively sound in the fact department, is just too childish. I truly respect and like the concept, but my 6-year-old daughter laughed at all the pictures as she read and kept mentioning how they weren't true pictures..."the boat didn't look like that!", etc. This book also doesn't change facts as much as in Moses but still is not as concrete as it could and should be.
