Purchased as a souvenir on a recent trip to the Vatican. Translation could be better in places. Would be better with a timeline of events etc. To be fair probably not possible for any book to capture the incredible magnificence of the place. Astonishing splendour at every turn. A trip to St Peter's Basilica dome is a must. Breathtaking.
As the publisher indicates, I got this book on my tour of the Vatican City when I went to Europe approximately 2 years ago. Despite my purchase I never actually read the book I bought simply glanced at the pictures. Going back and reading through it took me back to the time I was there but I feel the book would be not helpful to a learner if they’d never been on the tour.
The book provides little to no detail on most of the works pictured with some great exceptions like all of Michelangelo’s work throughout the Vatican. It essentially functions as a more detailed map with indicators of works in certain rooms. Then you can go research those works if you want more background than simply the image.
With this criticism being said, I feel there is no true way to encapsulate the splendor, magnificence and sense of holiness that permeates the place. If you bought it on the way through don’t be disappointed in your purchase because it will remind you and if you’ve never been check out some other books for a more detailed compliment to this one.
