Twisted Sisters 2 : Drawing the Line

In the mid-1970s, disillusioned by the politics of the Wimmin's Comix Collective, Diane Noomin and Aline Kominsky-Crumb formed Twisted Sisters Comics, which featured women cartoonists. Now Noomin is back at it with her second Twisted Sisters book, Drawing the Line. This collection features new work by Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Dame Darcy, Mary Fleener, Carol Lay, Penny Moran Van Horn, Krystine Kryttre, Carol Tyler, Carol Swain, and Noomin herself. The artists cover subjects ranging from sex, personality problems, rape, and miscarriages to cannibalism and the virgin birth.

A fine and worthy followup to the original Twisted Sisters volume!

If you’ve read the excellent original, you know the drill: cutting edge underground comics by female creators. Time has not dulled the edge of these stories in the slightest. Just about everyone from the first volume is back, with some new faces thrown in for good measure.

I won't attempt to review every story, but here are some random thoughts:

“Baby Talk” is quite possibly the single best story Diane Noomin has ever done. It's a rare foray into autobiography, and she makes effective use in the story of her desire to hide behind her usual fictional creations.

Stories from Mary Fleener, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, and Krystine Kryttre always make me happy.

“Minnie’s 3rd Love” by Phoebe Gloeckner us brilliant, albeit not for the faint of heart. And the ending is totally unexpected.

As with the first volume, highly recommended!

Excellent compendium of women cartoonists culled from the early 90's limited-run comic book series. There's not a clinker in the bunch; even the creators whose work is not generally to my liking (Carol Swain, Leslie Stenbergh, and series editor Diane Noomin herself) contribute stellar work here, and several tales, such as Phoebe Glockner's nightmarish "Minnie's 3rd Love" and Carol Tyler's typically hilarious tale of woe "Migrant Mother" are downright brilliant. Sadly, far too many of these cartoonists appear to have either left comics altogether (Krystine Kryttre, you are very missed) or seem to draw them only sporadically nowadays (Mary Fleener & Debbie Dreschler, ditto). At any rate, highly recommend this tome and eagerly awaiting the long-out-of-print first volume to arrive in the mail.

The first Twisted Sisters anthology was such a huge influence on me and my comics-making, that it is impossible for me to read it and give it an unbiased review. Is it good because it's brilliant? Is it good because it was so formative for my idea of what comics should be like? I can't say. Which is why I was so excited and nervous to finally get my mitts on this sequel.

Holy Mary, there was not one weak story in this anthology! All the stories were so honest and beautiful and hilarious and jarring. It made me re-evaluate the comics I've loved (and made) in the last decade, and hold them up to higher standards.

This might be the best comics anthology ever made. I am not exaggerating.

Really good! Not as much artist bio as the first anthology and only one comic per woman. Also, sometimes I don't love how it seems like it's trying to downplay the politics, but just the fact that it's all women has a certain politics. Can't believe I'd never read Debbie Drechsler before. She's incredible. Also loved the comics by Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Dame Darcy, Diane Noomin, and Phoebe Gloeckner.

About as far from costumed power fantasies as you're going to get. Auto-biographical (or possibly fauxto-biographical) stories predominate, though my favorites in the book are Carol Lay's mystical humor sections, with the intensity of Phoebe Gloeckner's coming-of-age as a close second.

This collection is graphic, disturbing, and unsettling, but it also unsparingly tells uncommonly heard stories with precise artistic integrity.
