A glossy, quality production, this guide is almost impeccably translated and proofread throughout. The layout avoids the showing of paintings across the gap between pages most times, and is tastefully designed. The writing style is intelligent, yet not inaccessibly verbose or filled with art jargon. The artworks conserved at the Uffizi date mostly from 1300s-1700s, and as such they are dominated by religious paintings and portraits of kings and cardinals, apart from some very ancient statuary. Ordinarily, this would make such a read rather tiresome, but this book fortunately interweaves the art pages with history about Florence, the building, the various rooms and their decor. Art academics will require a more detailed book, but for a guide aimed at the intelligent tourist, this couldn't really be bettered. 5/5
This beautiful catalogue / guide would be ideal (except for slightly large size) to carry through the museum. It is arranged room-by-room, showing exactly where every picture is in the room, and providing expanded discussions of the most important / beautiful works. It also is a wonderful keepsake of this astounding gallery, perhaps the greatest collection of Renaissance painting in the world. The Uffizi is manageable enough to be seen in one visit, but this book makes one long to do a systematic inventory, a few rooms per day, for however long it takes to bask in and digest the glory of its collection. (P.S.: When visiting the Uffizi, telephone in advance to get a reservation; this saves lots of time and the tedium of a long line.)
Excellent guide to the Uffizi Gallery. I would recommend stopping by the bookshop and picking this up before you wonder through the galleries. Also, available in most European languages.
I first picked this book up, of course, at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence in 2017, when I was on tour in Italy with students. My mission that year was to gather the guidebooks, so I could plan my succeeding trips to Italy better. It took me until I was on the cusp of the next trip to get around to reading it.
This is, of course, a guidebook, so not comprehensive, but it does give a good understanding of the Uffizi Gallery's collection and, just as important, the layout. The descriptions of the featured paintings are concise and interesting, so worth reading through to look for one's favourites. The translation sometimes produces slightly odd English, but nothing really difficult to read. And there is a list of all the art work in each room, which is actually quite helpful.
Definitely worth picking up for those who are interested, especially in Renaissance art.
A functional guide let down by a terrible font. There is also too much focus on who owned the paintings as opposed to what the painting are trying to say or the historical context of the painting.
The guide is being too kind to some of the paintings that do not deserve too much focus and not enough focus on some paintings that are famous and deserve more attention.
Almost every painting got coverage except for the famous Judith and Holofernes by Artimesia. Why? Search me. Maybe the authors hate Artimesia?
