This was a lot like the last ghost story book I reviewed, but it's all melodrama and no handful of interesting story cores. I didn't finish it, but when it devolved into That Same Old Hitchhiker Ghost Story You've Heard All Your Life I just had to set it down. Books that are about a particular locale should have stories unique to that locale. Otherwise, write some fictional stories. GEEZ.

A couple of these stories were really interesting. Most were sparse on details and lacked a distinctive North Carolina flavor. In other words, they felt like folklore stories I'd heard from other places, just placed into a North Carolina town I may or may not have heard of, but with nothing distinctive to North Carolina aside from a location name.

3.5/4 ⭐

This was a fun little read to kick off my spooky season just before October. Some interesting stories, some sad stories, a few chilling stories 👻 and a few unmemorable stories.
There are a couple of stories with animal cruelty to watch out for. Those ones made me the most sad. I don't like reading scenes of animals dying. Makes my heart hurt!

But overall pretty good!

Read this as a young adult and loved it! Included are quite a few stories and legends from North Carolina's past. My favorite story is The Ghost at Maco Station. While I don't believe in ghosts, it's fun to read about some unknown stories of my state!

I enjoyed this book. Each chapter is just a few pages, perfect for dipping in for a moment or so. Some tales I had heard, but others were totally new to me.

Contents:
The Ghost Comes for Blackbeard, Ocracoke
The General's Ghost, For Fisher
The Whaler's Return, Shackleford Banks
The Unearthly Music of Roan Mountain
Lifesaver of the Outer Banks
The Lovely Apparition, near High Point
Run of the Ghost Train, Warsaw
The Mysterious Hoofprints at Bath
The Fairy Cross, western North Carolina mountains
Music by the Ghost Organ, Kadesh
Bummer's End, Smithfield
The Little Red Man, Old Salem
The Thing at the Bridge, Smithfield
Devil's Tramping Ground, Siler City
The Light at Maco Station, Wilmington
Dromgoole, Chapel Hill
Ghost of the Old Mine, Gold Hill
The Battle of the Dead, Bentonville
The Ghost on the Stairs, Fayetteville

This book is well worth reading if you like gentle horror or ghost stories. Nothing is too scary and all are well told.

If you enjoy paranormal stories or North Carolina legends and history, then I think you would enjoy this book.

Nancy Roberts is a great storyteller, usually putting the reader into the story through the eyes of its participants. While her normal eye for detail is there, I found many of the stories to be a bit below her usual standard. Granted, her classic Ghosts of the Carolinas is a tough act to follow, but I'd still have to recommend that book over this one.

Copyright 1959, my copy is from 1991. I used to like to pick up these books while on vacation. This is a good book of 19 ghost stories & legends from North Carolina. Most modern books take a "Just the facts ma'am" approach to ghost stories. This author treats you to a real ghost story.
I liked the Blackbeard story in particular.

The stories were great! However, the writing style changed so much with each story that I could barely stand reading the book. It's like she was trying too hard to be descriptive and the stories got lost with the flowery language. Still an ok read.

Always nice to revisit the NC ghost stories from my youth. Roberts is a great story teller and pulls the reader into her version of each tale. A good starter book for anyone wanting to know more about haunted NC.

This is a quick read collection of short tales combining North Carolina history, folklore and the supernatural. Pirates, Civil War soldiers, and my favorite, "The Lovely Apparition. " Pretty good.
