Wow, I honestly don’t know how many times over the last few days I thought about just DNFing this book. Which is kind of crazy because I actually liked the movie. And especially after reading the book now, I have to say Moritz Bleibtreu was insanely well cast as Nappo. While reading, you can picture him perfectly as Nappo. Sure, I also see Axel Stein as Till, but with Nappo they definitely nailed it even more.

In the end, though, the book just doesn’t come close to the movie for me. A lot was cut and changed for the adaptation, and that was honestly a pretty good decision. I do need to rewatch the movie in the next few days, but from what I remember, it really feels like they got a lot out of this book and did a good job cutting out the unnecessary stuff.

My biggest problem is these unbelievably pointless chapters. You can basically skim parts of the book and still get almost the exact same thing out of it. There are so many pointless lines and entire passages thrown in that sometimes it feels like the book is just getting longer for the sake of being longer. I actually like the idea of switching between Till, Miriam, Bergmeier and Jessica. But I don’t need entire chapters about what Jessica happens to be thinking. And Bergmeier was even worse for me. Sorry, but I really don’t need complete chapters about what the chief inspector thinks about football or whatever other random stuff.

Just another quick comparison to the movie. Jessica was also just… really bottom of the barrel for me. Thank God they reduced her to the essentials in the movie.

The ending isn’t really any better either. You don’t really know what happens with Nappo, and I also don’t think it properly explains how Till gets himself out of all the shit he did. At times I even felt like the book was deliberately trying to lead you in a different direction again towards the end. And still, I kept reading. That’s probably the craziest part. There was still just enough tension there that I wanted to know how things would end for Till. Especially because by now I had also forgotten how the movie actually ends. Come to think of it, they also…

So yeah, sorry Ralf, but maybe just stick to Stromberg. I loved your Stromberg book, but this one… well. They really managed to get something good out of it for the movie, but the book itself was honestly pretty exhausting at times.

In the end, despite all the criticism, I still land on three out of five stars because Till’s parts managed to keep enough tension going. And did they seriously just forget about Nadine at the end? She just disappears from that hotel room.

If I could give zero stars, I would. So bad. This is the kind of book that shows how people's mind is filled with waste and dirt. It is neither inspiring, nor entertaining, not funny, nor thought-provoking. A complete waste of time. No recommendation at all. I still can't believe this got published.
