Steal Away: Devotions for Baseball Fans

Rate this book
Hugh Poland blends America's greatest pastime with America's greatest strength--"its spirituality. With grace and passion, Hugh shines light on the real soul of baseball by providing testimonies of its soldiers of the game. Drawing upon stories from current and former players and managers, including the famous and the unsung heroes, the author shares life's important lessons. Pee Wee Reese's stand for fair treatment of African American players before it was popular to do so offers a biblical look at justice and encouragement. Harvey Haddix's 1959 twelve-inning perfect game becomes an opportunity to examine perfection from God's point of view. Jesus' unwillingness to give up on Zacchaeus is compared to a scout's unwillingness to give up on a questionable prospect who went on to become baseball's home run Hank Aaron.

Well I love God and baseball so this was a great daily devotional combo for me. Poland takes various past and present mlb players and shares their faith with us. He combines this with God's word to give great daily lessons. Some of these brought tears to my eyes. Mickey Mantle coming to Jesus at the end of his life, players raising mentally challenged kids, players putting their fame and fortune into proper prospective etc. I really enjoyed this devotional and highly recommend it.
