The skills of Critical Thinking are important whatever subject you are studying. They enable you to assess what's been said or written by asking the right questions: 'What does this mean?' 'What else could it mean?' 'What other evidence do I need?' With your answers, you can suggest other explanations or scenarios: 'Perhaps it's this rather than that'. As a creative, enquiring thinker, you can then move on to produce well-argued material of your own. This new edition has been totally updated, but it continues in the tradition of the earlier editions in that it is invaluable for all students, whether you're doing a course in Critical Thinking (like the AS-level) or not. It quite simply covers everything you need to become a skilled Critical Thinker.
I first discovered this book while preparing for my LNAT. It was incredibly helpful in the critical analysis of various extracts and in writing an argumentative essay.
A year later, I read this book again in preparation for my law degree. The strengths of the book include (1) a concise and accessible format; (2) a wide range of examples from real-life sources; and (3) clear structure and explanations. However, at times it seemed that the use of examples was excessive, with the author focusing more on discussing them than on the concepts he introduced.
It is unlikely that any book can teach you how to think critically, as this is a skill developed through practice and reflection. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book to those who wish to adopt a more structured and guided approach to analyzing the information around them.
