Best New Horror 9 contains nineteen horror shorts published during 1997: those halcyon days immediately before we discovered the Millennium Bug that would destroy us all, ultimately rendering all horror fiction little more than silly bits of fluff. Could this be the best Best New Horror volume ever? I think it's got a strong qualification. "Christmas Forever?" "This Is Your Life?" "Coppola's Dracula?" These are all-time classics in the series, and Ramsey Campbell's unsettling "The Word" has stuck with me since I read it back in high school.
