The original plan, which involved a number of minor changes, has matured into a significantly different work. As in the earlier work, the aim here is to present a program of study within which technical proficiency develops concurrently with an understanding of basic concepts. Topics have been selected to provide reasonably complete coverage at the pre-calculus level. They have been organized, however, in an effort to emphasize the structure of mathematics, recognition of which is an important step toward "mathematical maturity." . . .
