I read this as a child and fell in love with the plot. More than a decade later, even when I couldn't remember the day of the week or what I'd eaten for lunch, I could remember the plot points of this book. When I rediscovered at my library, I decided to reread it. I'm not too sure if I should have. The writing style is bland and overly simplistic, with far too much telling and no showing; the female characters are all stereotypes, either bossy, beautiful, or victims - and they walk 'delicately' ; there are typeset errors, spelling errors, apostrophe errors, plot holes etc - so much so I wonder if this book actually had an editor. But the plot is still magical and adventurous and takes you all over London. I often reread books I loved as a child and realise they are still brilliant. This is not one of those books. There are many better written children's books out there - but the plot of this book still holds somewhat of a sway.
