Increasingly dissatisfied with her life-stle and beset by personal problems, Donna had decided to take herself away from it all for a while and find peace on a tiny deserted island in the Caribbean. But to her horror she discovered that the island was anything but deserted; for the insufferable Brent Sanders was already there, and making it plain he intended to stay! That was the end of peace as far as Donna was concerned - for Brent made his low opinion of her plain, yet he refused, for reasons of his own, to let her go. Whether she liked it or not, she would have to throw her lot in with Brent. Where would it all end?
Weird, mixed up story. At times, it's a treasure hunt. It's also a coming of age tale of a rich spoilt heiress. Then there's the other regular trope of the leads being marooned on a secluded island.
There's a lot of philosophical mish mash about love and life, which felt distinctly out of place.
I made it about a hundred pages to the Great, Big, Traumatik Seekret in Heroine’s Past that was hinted at throughout the story. Something so horrible and terrible that it gives heroine night terrors in which she screams and panics and faints and has to be revived by smelling salts. And she has never confessed it to anyone but now that she met the hero for five minutes and has completely been lobotomized by his hard, tan, muscled body and his bossy attitude, she is ready to tell it all:
Spoilers Ahead
When the heroine was 12, her mother brought home her affair partner who was drunk and mistakenly slipped into the 12 year old heroine’s bedroom but realizing his mistake promptly jetted out of there and returned to his mistress’ bedroom. The heroine followed him and saw him there with her mother. Her mother left with her lover the next day and heroine has been blaming herself ever since…still having bloodcurdling nightmares about it ten years later. I am sorry but I burst out laughing instead of being traumatized and empathetic. After that, there was no point in going on. They were both annoying characters anyway, he always smug and rude, she always dithering and trembling. Not my cuppa.
