Shamra Divided is the second in Mr. Hoffman's Shamra Chronicles. I have not had the opportunity to read the first in the series, Curse of the Shamra. However, Mr. Hoffman catches the reader up quickly, and Shamra Divided can be read as a stand alone novel.
Dara is a young teenage girl who doesn't want to spend her life as a housewife. She thrives on danger, but she doesn't have a death wish. She doesn't try to change herself to fit into with her people, her outspoken ways and opinions eventually garner their respect.
Chaos is determined to kill Dara and her people. It is up to her to lead them to destroy Chaos, and in the meantime, keep everyone alive, while staying true to herself. Full of adventure, many messages that speak true, and page turning action and complex characters, Shamra Divided is a wonderful fantasy adventure young adult read. I look forward to going back and reading the first in the trilogy. The only complaint I have is the cover. I just wish it were more contemporary. Definitely not a book I would pick up on my own in the store by the cover alone.

Dara was a strong-willed and spirited girl who did not bend to the status quo. I liked that she did not back down on her beliefs and that she was brave in the face of evil. Dara was not like the typical Shamra girls who were timid and afraid to speak up.
In the first book, I was a little overwhelmed by the violence and sadness brought on by the Trocs. Thankfully, the plot turned happier in the second book as Dara went on an adventure to find her heritage. I loved that she found her clan and that Briana told her stories about her ancestors. That was my favorite part.
Overall, these books touch on many emotions. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the Shamra Chronicles series, Chaos Unleashed, coming out in 2011. Thank you to Barry Hoffman for sending these books to me for review.

This is the kind of book that I would imagine has a cult following. Unfortunately, I'm not one of the followers. I read 100 pages of Shamra Divided before giving up. I just could not get into the story. Shamra Divided is a fantasy novel featuring a humanoid-type race called Shamra fighting to survive. They battle an enemy race called the Kimra. Shamra Divided is full of warriors, battles, prophets, spirits, fighting, and more fighting. I'm not a fan of extended fighting scenes. I can appreciate what Barry Hoffman is doing with his world and characters, but this book just wasn't for me.
Score:
Shamra Divided gets one star since I stopped after 100 pages.

Curse of the Shamra is a very unique fantasy with original characters. The story is one of strength and empowerment in a dystopian setting with well-developed creatures that we accompany very personally as they overcome oppression, alienation, and hardships beyond my own imagination.
I chose 3/5 stars not because it was a mediocre story; on-the-contrary it was very deep and thorough, but more-so because it's not MY type of story. If you enjoy getting lost in a fantasy world with very different creatures, you will love this book. I, however, would have liked to have seen some romance (I know...typical woman response).
This is the second book in the Shamra Chronicles, and I haven't read the first. This may impact my choice, when I get to it.

Dara is still traveling and trying to figure out who she is. When she arrives at Stone Mountain, many of her questions are answered by recountings of her history that Briana tells her. These stories of the past leave Dara with a sense of knowing who she is, but more questions have popped up, leaving her curiosity unsatisfied as she continues on her journey after Stone Mountain.
While the history lessons are fun and great to know, it did not help this book live up to the first. There is still one more to read, so I'm hoping it will answer the questions Dara and the reader are left with.
