This engaging book celebrates the wonders of Alaska in rhyme and meter. Adapted from the classic counting poem "Over the Meadow" by Olive Wadsworth, it inspires children to count the wildlife of the great northern wilderness: baby whales, bear cubs, fox kits, ptarmigan chicks, and more. In addition to the rhyme, the text includes a short description of each animal and a glossary that explains in simple terms things like what igloos are and why Alaska is called "The Land of the Midnight Sun."

This is another great book to help children learn how to count with the use of arctic animals out in their real life elements in the arctic. Every page is filled with a different animal and a different amount of said animal to help show the representation between a number and the amount that represents. I think this would best be utilized in kindergarten classroom as students are just learning how to count.

I loved this title about Arctic animals, the illustrations are full page in beautiful Arctic colors. Yes it is a counting book with text written in four line stanzas for each animal with a repeating line of,”far north in the Arctic”. Plus there is an added section featuring a paragraph of information about each of the animals featured in the text. Who knew beluga whales don’t turn completely white until they are six years old and the Inuit peoples learned to make igloos from the polar bears who dig into the snow to keep warm. I didn’t.
Good title to accompany a study unit on Alaska at older grade levels as it is much more than a counting book. I really enjoyed this title.

Came across this book for sale at my local goodwill in still brand new condition for a low price. I'm so glad I bought it, my child loved it and so did I! The illustrations are beautifully done and the counting that goes a long with the story line is wonderful as well. An overall, great children's book!
