I read this in a kindle version of omnibus Christmas in Cedar Cove which includes this novella and the novella that slots in between books 8&9 of the cedar cove series.
I'm not sure why this slots in at this point in the series as apart from the inclusion of Charlotte from previous books who is friends with Helen a character in this story this is quite easily a stand alone novel in itself (at least you don't need to have read the previous 5 books to follow the story), whether this story conta

This was a great story mixing in military and Christmas. We learn about how Ruth met her husband Paul and the obstacles they overcame to be together and while this was going on intermixed is the story of Helen Shelton and her battles during WWII including a previous marriage conspiring against the German's spending two years in a concentration camp and being rescued by her second husband Sam prior to them knowing what they were going to be two each other.

So much homeyness in this book and hints

Disappointed

Even though I usually like this author's books , this one was very boring and predictable. She could have done better. The only redeeming feature was the grandmother's story.

For a short story, I loved this book. The background into World War II was captivating. I found myself googling the camp she talked about. It was sad and inspiring and worth reading.

5-B Poppy Lane is book #5.5 of the Cedar Cove series set in contemporary Washington state. The story is set at Christmas time, and is primarily a flashback to how Ruth Shelton met Paul Gordon, and how she learned her grandmother Helen's surprising history.

Ruth was a graduate student and an antiwar pacifist. In the holiday spirit, as an act of kindness in support of American troops stationed overseas, she sent a Christmas card to a nameless soldier. She never expected a response. But Paul Gordon,

Ruth sent a Christmas card to a nameless soldier never expecting to hear from him. However, the soldier, Paul, did write back from Afghanistan where he was stationed. He asked about her and shared information about himself. Even though Ruth didn't believe in war, she replied to his letter understanding his need for contact with the outside world. Their correspondence increased and went to emails so they got to know each other quite well. Ruth was excited that Paul wanted to meet her when he came ...more

I finished reading the Cedar Cove series, or so I thought. Apparently their was a novella written in an anthology book and was supposed to be read after 50 Harbor Street. The story was re-printed in a reissue of a Cedar Cove Christmas (I read the Kindle edition), but most of this story is a re-telling of Helen Shelton's life during WWII and not fully based around Christmas time. I read this book in one day.

Ruth Shelton is coming to town to visit with her grandmother, Helen Shelton. Helen is chat

The young main girl of this story has a negative attitude toward war, who doesn’t, nobody likes war. What I didn’t like was her condescending attitude toward soldiers. A lot of the people who end up joining the military are dirt poor and have no options, so they go to the only place that will instantly give them food, shelter, clothing, and a steady pay check. It is the American soldiers that keep this country free. If it wasn’t for them, we could be overrun with who knows what. I don’t like see ...more

It was okay. I read it after the 8th book which is fine. I really wanted to like Ruth but found I didn't. I thought she was very spoiled and unforgiving. I liked paul being a man of character and all. The only reaon i liked this book was because of helens story. I found her to be very fascinating and brave and smart. I felt that there was a lot of history with her story which I really wanted to know. I felt the courtship was way too brief in the story. I would have liked them to explore the room ...more

Does not flow with the other books in the Cedar Cove collection. The characters from the other books are not mentioned with the excpetion of one. The new characters introduced in this book are not developed enough to connect with them. The story line reminds me of Winter Garden which I was not fond of either.

Excellent read!

Once I started this book I could not put it down. A real love story based on true love. True love isn't always free of different opinions but in the end everything ends with a happy ending.

I enjoyed this Christmas Romance. I voluntarily chose to review this. I've given it a 5* review. It takes part of history and entwines it with around our time. Very interesting. Just how well do we know each other and what sorrows do we hide from others.

Loved this touching story. I enjoy reading stories about Cedar Cove. But this story was such a strong story of how love can carry you through all sorts of life issues, including war. As always, Debbie Macomber wrote a beautiful and touching story.
She is one of my go-to author.

A Cedar Cove holiday back story that helps set the series. Stands by itself.
An old story told from World War II bring family together. Have your parents or grandparents shared stories of their younger days that changed your perspective of them?

Easy reading. Pleasure not to have to analyze it.

This was a book you could relax and read without having to wonder what the message was especially at the time when things are we hectic. I read it in one setting while my husband was watching football.

Another heartfelt book by Debbie Macomber

I especially loved this book because I could in some ways visualize the concentration camp after visiting Auschwitz while on a church mission team to Poland in May 1993. I cannot imagine what Helen experienced during the war.

Stupid story

Don't waste your money or time. The grandmother's account of her life during the resistance and Nazis was interesting. What people had to do to survive.
