Splat the Cat #4
Scaredy-Cat, Splat!
It's Halloween, and Splat is determined to be the scariest cat in the class. Unfortunately he's just too much of a scaredy-cat. He's afraid of a little spider, and everyone says his costume looks more silly than scary. And when Mrs. Wimpydimple tells a ghost story in the dark, Splat gets so frightened that he tips over his jack-o'-lantern. But when the lights go back on, the entire class is scared silly by a small, black, furry creature with a big pumpkin head. Whooooo can it be?

Rob Scotton - creator of the Splat the Cat series, as well as the Russell the Sheep books - is turning out to be another one of those hit-or-miss authors for me. After a largely indifferent reaction to the initial Splat title (
Splat the Cat
), but moderate enjoyment of the second two (
Love, Splat
and
Merry Christmas, Splat
), I was curious to see what I would make of this, the fourth installment of our intrepid feline hero's adventures. Unfortunately, it turns out that Scaredy-Cat, Splat! falls into the indifferent category.
The story of Splat's efforts to win the prize for being the scariest cat at Halloween, it features the same mad-cap antics and fuzzily cute illustrations as the other books. But somehow, the whole thing just fell flat for me. It's not that there was anything wrong with it, from either a textual or artistic standpoint, it just wasn't very interesting. I confess that I'm disappointed, not least because, having now liked two Splat books, and been indifferent to two, I'm inevitably going to have to take a look at the next one, if for no other reason that to break the "tie." Why on earth do I do this to myself...?

Originally posted on Creative Madness Mama.Splat the Cat is such a silly cat, he's always up to some sort of planning for a school themed-activity. This time he wants to be the scariest and not scared-est cat and of course Seymour is there to help!
This is a good 9x9" hardcover to add to the seasonal shelf. Friendship, working through things when they don't go exactly as planned, and fun Halloween ideas.
If you're interested, there is a Splat the Cat costume out there in the world! Ahh!!!

Splat the Cat has his mind set on being the scariest one in the class this year. Unfortunately for him, he is too much of a scaredy-cat. Everything makes him jump including a little tiny spider. The whole class thinks his costume is supposed to be silly and when his teacher reads a spooky story to the whole class, Splat gets so nervous that he knocks over his jack-o-lantern. However, when Splat stands back up with his head stuck inside his pumpkin, he gives the whole class a great big scare. I read this book to my preschool class at work and they absolutely loved it, so much that I read it twice in a row. The illustrations in this book are cute and enticing. The language is fun and flows easily. I can’t wait to order this book for my future classroom and read it every year during the month of October.

Splatty is back!!! And boy is he in a pumpkin of trouble this Halloween! He decides today is the day he becomes the scariest cat in school. Of course he still freaks out over his new pet spider, which is scary enough. So he and his mouse sidekick Seymour head for school to take part in a costume contest. First though, teacher cat Ms Wimpy-Dimple puts the kitty-gartners thru scary storytime! And the spookiness gets to Splatty (naturally!), Splatty freaks (no surprise there!) and the jack-o'-lantern pumpkin lands on his head and boom, either he's the Headless Horseman of legend, or just a clueless Hoarsely Whimperer Kittycat! Splatty the Cat still charms young and old with his antics and his big heart. One hopes this is one cliche in cat fiction that will never change! Sounds deep? You bet!
Four stars
Love is kinda Splatty with a spooky little cat like him!!!

Back in 2008, Splat the cat burst onto the scene with his first adventure. Since that time he has fallen in love and enjoyed a Merry Christmas. Now, Splat is ready to celebrate Halloween and wishing to be the scarriest cat at the school party. Can he do it?! With his ever present mouse friend Seymour and wise advice from his mom, Splat heads off to school determined to scare.
Scotton's latest Splat adventure is begging to be read aloud with all the enthusiasm and dramatics befitting this funny feline. This is a welcome addition to Halloween titles, suitable for preschool through 1st grade.
The tale is told supported by Scotton's own adorable wide eyed illustrations, that will illicit giggles and grins. Couple this with Boo to you! by Lois Ehlert for some gentle halloween fun for little ones.

I really enjoy the Splat series. A clumsy, silly black cat with a lot of themed books makes for easy shelf-fillers and fun read alouds. Kids relate to Splat and find the illustrations and stories humorous and easy to read. I have my October display stockpiled and this was one of the first books I chose to read aloud to my kiddos. It was a good time as we kick off October reads!

This silly Halloween story is sure to get a giggle from young readers as they find out who’s going to win the scariest-cat contest at cat school. Splat seems to be afraid of everything and everyone, but he really wants to win the contest. Colorful, humorous illustrations help make this a fun book to share with kids as Halloween approaches.

This is the perfect Halloween read for a young little who doesnt need the spookiness of the holiday but wants the holiday cheer! My 4 year old enjoyed watching Splat try his best to be the spookiest Cat for Halloween and empathized that he was definitely a Scaredy-cat. Great, quick little read. Perfect for September/October!

Splat wants to win his class' scariest costume contest and even carves what he thinks going to be the scariest jack-o-lantern. When he gets to school he sees that his friends are dressed scarier than he is, but when the teacher starts to tell a scary story, things seem to change. A pretty quick read that felt a little disconnected at times, but overall is a fun Halloween read.

This is such a cute and funny Halloween story. Splat wants to prove he’s not scared, but he ends up learning that it’s okay to be a little afraid sometimes. The pictures are bright and full of personality, kids will love Splat’s silly expressions and the spooky fun. It’s a great read-aloud for Halloween.

March 7, 2026This is a story about Splat the cat who is feeling nervous and scared about going to a haunted house. Throughout the story, Splat imagines all the scary things that might happen, which makes him even more frightened. I liked how the book shows Splat’s feelings in a funny and relatable way, especially for kids who sometimes get scared too.

It’s Halloween and splat has the best costume. He is going a witches cat. And her really wants to take his new spider friend to school. But when splat breaks his broom he will draw new inspiration from his many legged friend to come up with the scariest cat costume ever.

As someone not entirely familiar with the series, I found this book to be entirely adorable. My daughter laughed throughout as Splat was frightened by even the smallest of things... and we cheered in the end. Definitely an age appropriate, wonderful holiday read.

Splat is worried he won't be scary enough in his spider costume for halloween. When a jack o'lantern falls on his head during a lights out, he scares everyone and wins anyway :)
