2026 reads: 38/300

in the second volume of rogue sun, dylan sets off down a destructive path. with his stepmom keeping a tight leash on his training, he’s stronger than ever, but will it be enough to face his most dangerous foes yet?

i’m having so much fun with this series! dylan annoys me so much, but for some reason, i feel sisterly toward him. i also thought the art was improved compared to the previous volume. we did get a “choose-your-own-adventure” story in the first issue, which was cool at first, but did frustrate me because i, unfortunately, missed the foreshadowing needed to succeed💀 overall, though, i’m really enjoying rogue sun. i’m looking forward to the next volumes!

As my interest in other Massive-verse books starts to wane a little, this book continues to leave me wanting more. Definitely the shining star of that line.

Uneasy is the teen who wears the hero garb and holds the power. Dylan gets into it deeper with family and villains and learns more about the sun stone. I really dug chapter 10 & 11 in the realm of the Aviary and the introduction of the most fascinating character so far: The Ravyn Queen. To close out the trade we get a confrontation between Rogue Sun and a couple of villains with issues. Parrott leaves it all on a real cliffhanger as to what happens next. Good stuff!

I can’t put into words how creative this book is. Structuring the book like a “Choose-Your-Own-Adventure” novel to tell a time travel story and using the joys (and frustrations) of that format to demonstrate how your characters think is absolutely *brilliant*.

The story afterwards is great too, with our protagonist’s recklessness finally coming back to bite him as he visits The Aviary and draws the attention of Morningstar. I’m continually impressed by the books in the “Supermassive-verse” and I can’t wait to read more. Highly recommended.

This volume played with form in a way that I loved. I’m a huge fan when comics take weird risks, and the “choose your own adventure” issue to drive home the motif of timey wimey hopelessness and the horizontal page spreads while in the Raven Queen’s realm really did it for me.

I also love that the story intro’s Hellbent and his dad as a foil to Dylan and his father. The injured henchman-inspiring-vengeance plot is very fun and ripe for drama.

Really solid character work throughout. Excited to see the conflict with Knight Sun. He’s not the mentor I imagined.

The art, design, and lettering don’t miss here.

Above all, I love that we saw some actual consequences and growth from Dylan.

Rogue Sun stays the strongest title in the Black Radiant Universe, with Dylan becoming a more interesting charcter by the issue.

The slow growth of Dylan becoming a selfish asshole to a selfless hero is great to watch. This time his siblings summon someone to aid him once more but not his father but a knight who used to be t he wielder of the Rogue Sun. This leads Dylan to learn to fight a lot better but as he goes against someone who hurts someone close to him he begins to question if he's a hero, which results into a shocking but somewhat foreseeable future.

I do think the twist was a bit too obvious. Or maybe like Dylan I don't trust a lot of people, so was a little to easy to see coming. Saying that it was handled well enough, Dylan and his family are a mess but great to watch grow, art stays top notch with some cool fights, and overall a blast. The do your own adventure in issue 6 was a bit too gimmicky for me but also kind of fun.

A 4 out of 5.

Rogue Sun's second volume solidifies my suspicions about the first volume: is can go toe to toe with Radiant Black.

Hellbent is a solid arc, logically following the ramifications of Dylan's choices that have lead to his new living situations. His newfound family is full of strife, his parental guidance is gone, and his ego is front and center. But all of these elements get shaken up well as Dylan grapples with new players in his world, magical adversaries that change the scope and focus of his super hero life.

The thing is, even with new villains, artifacts, and a couple of twists and turns, Dylan is always the best thing about the series. He's not a nerdy genius or an underdog with a heart of gold. He's a bully with problems at home. His closest friend is his primary victim. His love interest is an ex that knows exactly who he is, and steers clear. And getting to see what superheroing does to someone who is the opposite of the typical young hero is intriguing in a very different but equally awesome way that Radiant Black's protagonists are losers in their 30s who haven't grown up. The fact that Rogue Sun so confidently doesn't really connect at all with any of the other series (so far) is a testament to this. They know they have something special on their hands.

This might be one of the best superhero trades I have ever read. It was absolutely phenomenal - using everything the comics medium can traditionally offer and then some to tell a story. It was in some ways a classic coming of age tale and in others something very new, set against an amazing part-real, part-fantasy backdrop. Absolutely awesome.

Cóż.. komiks wygląda świetnie i tyle.

This book continues to be so good, I love the twists and challenges here and like how it pushes Dylan into a new status quo and then there's the thing with unique storytelling and how he fights against this new enemy Ornate and its like a D&D game thats awesome and how it depends on his choice lol, confusing read but interesting try.

Then there is the stuff with him injuring one of the henchmen and now his son is after Dylan and its a nice twist and continuation and shows Dylan being reckless and how that comes back to haunt him and the new villain HELLBENT that the son becomes is so interesting, his design is kinda like Rogue Sun and how he challenges him is the thing and he has to retrieve something called "The Quill" from this place "The Aviary" and yeah he gets a new mentor after his step-sister does something, and fun twist, medieval knight.

And omg what happens in the end with him like you see it coming with all the build-up and hints and he seemed a gray character from the beginning and next volume is gonna be fun, but I love the way the writer is expanding on the abilities of this character and his power skills and how it will expand, I wanna see and omg something big emotional happens here and I like how it will change the character.

Its an interesting volume which introduces some new villains, expands on the others and whoever the big bad guy is, that ultimate face-off will be fun to see but after that ending, the next volume is gonna be awesome and as always the art was great again!!

Twists and turns galore as Rogue Sun enters its second arc.

I definitely think Rogue Sun is my favourite of the Massiveverse books, not just because it's got a more supernatural bent compared to the sci-fi essence of the Radiants and Dead Lucky. Rogue Sun expands its mythos with some funky new characters, an awful new villain, and even a Choose Your Own Adventure issue, which is always hard to do and yet superb when it works (and in this case, it does).

What I like too here is the constantly evolving status quo - things are very different by the end of this volume than they were at the beginning, and the same was true of the previous volume too. It feels like growth, and natural growth too, rather than just shaking things up and then getting back to normal as soon as possible.

The art's a little less consistent this time because Abel wasn't able (ha!) to draw the entire thing, only four of the six issues. We get contributions from Marco Renna and Ze Carlos however, who do a good job of filling in, but the idea of fill-ins on independent books always rubs me the wrong way.

Rogue Sun has set itself apart in all the best ways, and I'm even more excited for the next arc than I was for this one. Great stuff.

Rogue Sun volume 2!! This comic has cemented itself as my favorite comic of all time, something I couldn’t have predicted, as I had low expectations for it, not because of any reviews or anything that had left me with a bitter taste, I just went completely blind into it not expecting anything. While I prefer Vol 1 to Vol 2, I’m still keeping Vol 2 at 5 stars because where it very faintly lacks in story deepness compared to 1, it makes up with the INCREDIBLE use of the comic format!! It always makes me excited to see more experimental comics/ comics try different things and be weirder and more interesting, specially when it’s in service of the story!! The first issue of Vol2 blew me away. Rogue Sun continues to shock me with its commitment to not being a stereotypical superhero story, it has complicated characters, that a lot of times you do not like or trust, and they make bad, difficult decisions, and the consequences are permanent, and that’s what I love so much!! It’s different in the right way, in a good away. I just want to read more Rogue Sun!!

Dylan is now officially Rogue Sun, so his real problems can begin. While you can pretty much see the ending coming from miles away, it's still an enjoyable ride ad does a good job of setting up the next story arc. Despite a few confusing panels, the artwork is largely straightforward. Parrott continues helping flesh out the MassiveVerse with additional characters. The only problem there is that they're the same characters the title introduced last issue, and neither their story nor development takes a major leap forward here.

This volume of Rogue Sun started off with one of the coolest issues of comic I've read and Ryan wrote a choose your own adventure story. They even included an alternate cover that looked exactly like of the novels from 30 or so years ago. This volume introduces Hellbent as he gets the powers from Mourningstar in order to destroy Rogue Sun. It is another well written and beautifully drawn and inked story and I loved it.

I've been getting into the Massive-verse comics and have been Rogue Sun. Volume 2 picks up and spares no time getting into the action. Lot of great art and cool panel layouts. The story continues to build upon the magical mythos of the Massive-verse and brings in new characters with their own agendas.

Looking forward to what comes next!

A strong continuation that improves on the original. Dylan's character continues to develop and we also get a sense of what the bigger world is like: there's actually a method to the madness, not just random supervillains. With the new depth comes new interest in the story.
